Closest hotel to Monteverde Forest

4.0 of 5 bubblesReviewed Feb 16, 2024
This place is unusual. It has quite a bit of wildlife in the grounds. The hotel rooms are decorated in wood and it could do with a bit of an uplift. The rooms are damp but expected in the middle of a cloud forest. The staff were great and very helpful and the food was of a high quality.

The hotel is 5km up the steep road from Santa Elina town centre.

We stayed in a mountain suite and it was very noisy all night and throughout our stay with whistling winds and winds rattling through the roof and all the doors kept banging. Appreciate nobody can control the weather but it did keep us up all night, both nights.

Breakfast is a very simple table service with some fruits and a choice of eggs. The portions were small and we thought the offering could have been more substantial and enhanced somewhat. We did find it strange, given all the comments regarding breakfast in other reviews that the management have not addressed this issue.

Other frustrations included very weak water pressure in the shower and it was cold in the bathroom. Room was cold, although extra blankets are provided in the closet. Only way to access drinking water was via an outside tap in the car park!

We were disappointed with this hotel due to the poor breakfast offering and 2 x bad sleepless nights with the wind and noise. If I was to have my time again I would choose to stay somewhere further down the mountain and closer to the town centre and then take advantage of the free shuttle services to visit the cloud forest.

Room tip: Ask for a ground floor room, as the wind rattles through the roof all night

We stayed here for two nights, arranged by a travel agent. The staff kindly upgraded us to a mountain view room with a king bed and that significantly improved our stay. The room was spacious with a huge window and view of the mountains. Nice bathroom with strong, hot shower. Reliable wifi. We visited in December and weather was pretty cold and windy. Hearing the wind and warming up underneath blankets added to the cloud forrest experience (heater was offered but we did not use it; probably would if we had stayed longer). The hotel is 15 min drive from town of Santa Elena ($12 taxi; no uber in this region) and 15-20 min walk to the entrance of the Monteverde cloud forrest national park (tours include transport). Breakfast was modest but delicious. The hotel restaurant was open for lunch and dinner (till 8:30) with very good food (quality and price similar to in town options); happy hour starts at 3:30pm. There are many activities in the area that staff will arrange for. The staff were very pleasant and accommodating. We did night tour, day nature walk in the park, and coffee+chocolate tour; all were excellent. A tour guide is a must to see any animals.

Such a unique experience. Rooms were big with high ceilings and ver spacious. I enjoyed the
separate shower room from sink/vanity room. Our room came with a mini living room/seating
area that overlooked the garden from bay windows. Served breakfast and parking included.
Free spring water tap outside for easy access to refill water bottles was a huge amenity. Friendly
staff. About a 10-15 drive from downtown restaurants and shops. Only drawback was there isn’t
a fridge In the rooms. Would highly recommend for a unique hotel experience different from
the typical hotel room.

Pleasant, clean hotel with staff who are attentive and when asked are really helpful and supportive. This might explain some reviews talking about the manner of staff. They are relaxed but not in your face all the time or pandering to your every need. And the approach works well in this hotel.

Weather is wild with storms and wind but also fun with it. We worked around the showers and rarely got wet. Rooms are comfortable and we were never cold.

The walk down to town was good with stops for coffee, ice cream and shopping.

Being honest we were on an organised trip with no transport and would probably suggest a hotel nearer town if only to save the $10 each way taxi fare.

The hotel is very comfortable and clean, with beautiful garden. Good local cuisine with good raw materials and reasonable price. Breakfast could have a bit more variety but it is fine. It is located very close to the cloudy forest. They will help with reservations. Quiet, warm people.
