Hotel Fonda Vella

An ok hotel in nice surroundings. This was the coolest part of Costa Rica so would recommend light jackets particularly for the evening. The pool was on the cold side and I guess would be nice on hotter days. The jacuzzis were nice and warm though and were like sitting in a bath! There is a nice walk as part of the hotel (although short ) with little stone
chairs and tables to sit at. Small mammals wander around as well as many birds flying around, nice gardens.

The rooms were ok. We had three in total, one was very dark and on the ground floor. The other two were ok with steps upstairs to another bed and sleeping area. They also had a small fridge and coffee making facilities ( although no creamer or milk to use) However the rooms are set so we had to walk past one of the rooms with the bed in full view so people staying there would have to keep curtains closed if they wanted any privacy. But if a strange set up.

The hotel also had larger suite rooms which looked much nicer.

Breakfast was ok - although it was the poorest we had in the hotels we stayed in on our tour of Costa Rica. Buffet style. One day we were a bit later and most of the fruit had ran out.

We got a taxi to the town ( not within walking distance ) to eat there as from first glance at the menu and from other reviews it was expensive and not the best experience. We ate in the tree house which was ok to good- unique experience of eating within part of a large tree! Lots of souvenir shops in the town ( relatively expensive) and a very nice bakery with savoury and sweet things which we used for a picnic on one day.

Wouldn’t want to stay for more than a couple of nights.

We went on the horse riding tour (Rodeo) that was advertised in the hotel which was very good.

What a fantastic setting, gorgeous rooms, manicured gardens.
Really let down by inattentive staff - in this price bracket I would have expected reception to be manned by at least one staff member at all times (several times we waited to drop/collect room key) and the welcome a little frosty.
Needs a management shake up to restore Tripadvisor faith.

We stayed 2 nights at the Fonda Vela in Monteverde and we really enjoyed it. The place is located on beautiful gardens well maintained and we woke up to the sound of nature every morning. Our room was large and roomy, very clean and comfortable it came with a small fridge. The pool area is nice and clean and it was fun to relax around. Breakfast in the morning is buffet-style with many choices ans it was good. It's possible to have lunch and dinner there too or to take a taxi to nearby St-Elena for other options. It was a good experience for us.

The hotel itself is amazing. Beautiful location. Extensive gardens which are well maintained and from where you can admire the wildlife. Very large room with impressive hard wood furniture and brilliant polished wood floors. Pool, jacuzzi, ...

Staff are disengaged and not properly trained. The manager slumps around in the bar/ reception area and does not engage with guests. There is no 'leading from the top' at this establishment. Which is heart breaking to see , given the venue and what this hotel has the potential to be.

Welcome drink. Don't get me started. I've never felt so unwelcome. After waiting 20mins for service at the bar, requesting assistance from 2 members of staff, begging one member of staff to just serve the drinks quickly to us, I had to resort to calling for the manager. He came, was pretty disengaged but finally the drinks did come. They were ok.

Towels. One towel in the room on arrival for use by a family of 4. I went to reception and asked for more towels. No apology was given just an 'oh, that's not good' from the manager slumped in a chair. And he clearly didn't care or speak the cleaning staff about it, as the next day and the next , we had an inadequate number of towels in the room.

Dangerous shower window - shower screen came off the rails whilst I was opening it. It fell towards the bath area and I was able to grab hold to stop it falling on me. My husband was able to pull from the other side whilst I lifted it back into place. I'm not convinced a child would have had the strength to do this. I didn't bother to report it as I was convinced nothing would be done about it anyway. The staff / manager just aren't interested.

Restaurant food is average / below average and the prices are ridulcously high. $188 for a meal for 4 people!! And 2 of the meals were on a discounted special offer!! Total rip-off. After a very odd dining experience (chef and waiter both hovering over our table to take the order, immediate feedback being asked on the meal when we'd only taken a sip of the soup, a battle with a wine cork....) we never went back. And we're much happier as a result. There are much better options at a fraction of the price in the town. Take a taxi.

Pool / jacuzzi - pool was cold so we did not venture in. Pool side was not staffed so not possible to get a drink down there. After an initial look, we never went back.

Check in/out -lady was pleasant enough. But at check out she did not ask us how our stay had been. Not surprising really as we saw the manager several times during our stay and he never thought to ask either. Or even give us a smile and pass the time of day.

Don't waste your money staying here. There are many other places where the staff offer a smile and talk to you. Both of which cost nothing.

This hotel was clearly somebody's labour of love to design and construct. It is heartbreaking to see current management destroying this.

This place is more resort-like and spread out than it appears. Which is awesome. The rooms - at least the Jr Suites - are stunning! We were pleasantly surprised. We were happy they had a trail around the property and upon walking it, spotted a Quetzal! We only had one night here and wished we'd booked more. We will be back!

Room Tip: Jr Suite!!
