Great views from bkfst room - wonderful bkfsts prepared by Renzo, host extraordinaire!
Renzo knows just about everything about Monteverde/Santa Elena, and he is also a dad and an outdoor enthusiast, so his advice is very apropo. A really good base for exploring the area. Renzo graciously arranges tours, some of which include pickup-drop off! Only wished there were fridges in the rooms, or a common fridge (not fair that the famous Monteverde cheese factory is in town and you can't really buy any of their products to eat later!). Be prepared for steep hills in this 'mountain' town! Another reviewers request for a few comfy places to read would really be a plus, too (not to mention a jacuzzi...but then the price would have to go way up, wouldn't it?)....

Room Tip: Some folks may need ear plugs for the noise of the wind...

We just got back from our vacation to Costa Rica and had an amazing time. Our first stop was Monte Verde and after talking with friends who recommended that we definitely stay at the "Hotel El Viandante". Although this b and b is beautiful and amazing what really made our stay amazing was Renzo, we didn't get to meet Grace unfortunately as she was on vacationn with the kids. After a little scare with the location of our reservation (it was under tweetster my nickname instead of my real name =) he showed us our room and told us that when we got settled in to come down and he would help us to plan our stay. We took a nap due to flying all night and then came down to talk to him. Renzo went to work finding out what we wanted to do while in Monte Verde, we told him definitely zip lining and a coffee tour, we went over all of our options for ziplining from extreme adventure to very low key relaxing, based on his experience and our stamina we chose "Aventura" which was one down from the most extreme but still pretty adventurous. For our coffee tour he recommended "El Trapiche" which was also a great choice as the coffee was amazing, we learned a lot, our tour guide was hilarious and we saw a sloth resting in a tree. We also got to make our own candy with the sugar cane that they grow. We were also able to fit in a tour to a cloud forest, there are two to choose from "Monteverde" and "Santa Elena". He suggested Santa Elena because although Monteverde is more popular, it is also more crowded and you see the same things, he said that at Santa Elena it would be more intimate with the hiking. He was right, it was beautiful, being in the deep jungle and the sound of the birds and the beautiful plants, the paths were well taken care of and easy to maneuver. The gift shop wasn't the greatest but we could get souvenirs in town. We didn't really see much wilflife there except some lizard and we did see a snake that they showed us in a tree by the entrance, way up high all coiled up, It was a beautiful experience, lots of hiking though so beware of that, easy hiking but lots of it. It was hard not to over do it as there was so much to see. Renzo arranged all of our tours and the bus would pick us up right on time at the doorstep, it was so easy and wonderful. He was fun to talk to and very protective of us, giving us the cautions of our next location and the dos and don'ts of Costa Rica, he made sure that our ride to take us to Manuel Antonio was really taking us there and that he was on the up and up, it was so cute. He is one in a million. Okay, about the hotel, it is a beautiful and clean building in a log cabin style with beautiful views, the breakfasts were very good with fruit to begin with and then always a yummy entree to follow. I loved the coffee there, it is up high on a hill and a short walk to town and going to town is not bad walking as it is all downhill but walking back can be hard. We tried it the first night and although we made it, it was a good workout. The taxis however are only 2 dollars or 1 collone to and from so take advantage of that. The town was quaint and cute with great souvenir shops and restaurants. Renzo will give you the run down on the good places to go, our favorite while there was "Marquez". Great dessert with "Banana Flambe". The ONLY downside to the place at all was for me, the beds were quite firm, I like soft mattresses better but my husband loved the beds as he likes firm, the wind howls at night and so can be noisy but I thought it added to the ambiance, the shower would go hot and the cold but we got used to the pattern so it is doable and we found that is the case all over in costa rica, also in costa rica itis hard to find bath tubs, only showers, and there really isn't a place to go to just sit in a comfortable chair and relax and read or think, this place Monteverde is definitely for the adventurous at heart, not necessarily for the relaxation. My recommendation is to come here first for the adventure, hike and zipline and go crazy with sightseeing and then for the second part of your trip go to the ocean areas for the relaxation part of the trip, this is what we did and we were happy that we did Monte Verde first and relaxed afterwards. Oh, the road coming in to Monteverde is all dirt and rocks and it is like that for about an hour and a half or something like that, it was amazing to see the city and life up high in the mountains, it was great. You may want to hire a driver to take you there as they know the roads better. We were happy we didn't rent a car on that road. Also dry season is better there as the road can be washed out otherwise, best time to go is Feb/Mar from what I hear. All in all wonderful time, Renzo was amazing, I'm sure that Grace is amazing. If I were to maybe make any suggestion it would be a jacuzzi for at the end of the day and all of the hiking and maybe some comfortable chairs for relaxing but I would definitely stay there again. Thanks Renzo.

Room Tip: All rooms seem great. We were in room 5 and there are 3 beds, a double and two twins, lots of wind but I kind of liked it.

We enjoyed our two night stay here last week. The hotel is clean and comfortable. The breakfast room has great views and an all day pot of coffee. It served as a place to meet fellow travelers. Breakfast was made fresh and was tasty.
Renzo provided us with such great information about the area and restaurants. He graciously answered our numerous questions and helped with reservations. He was so friendly and helpful.
I would definitely recommend this hotel to others.

We stayed here in February 2012 and had such a great time - it was our favourite hotel in Costa Rica. Renzo (one of the owners) was incredibly friendly and helpful both before and during our stay. He is very knowledgeable about the local area and the country in general and so pick his brains about things to do if you want some inspiration. If you visit Santa Elena, I'd strongly recommend a trip to the San Luis waterfall as it's beautiful. We ate as Sabor Espanol on Renzo's recommendation and would definitely recommend it to others - great food by a Spanish couple who have settled in the area.

The hotel is very comfortable - rooms are very clean and spacious. The breakfast is excellent, make sure you leave plenty of room!

My husband and I felt so lucky to have chosen El Viandante for our visit to Monte Verde. Renzo was the best host we have had in years of travel. He was warm and gave us great information. His hand-drawn maps helped us find vegetarian-friendly restaurants, walk to la Catarata San Luis, and catch some amazing views.

Hotel Viandante has a spectacular sunset view towards the Nicoya Peninsula. Grab a cup of tea (or something stronger) and enjoy it!

The room and breakfast were great.

Renzo says that the hotel books up in advance from mid-January through March, so don't wait too long to secure your spot.
