If you're looking for an escape from Bangkok, don't bother going to Ko Mak and definitely not to this resort - it is not worth the extremely long journey!
Granted, July is low season and we were one of three couples staying at the hotel, but the employees on hand are completely inexperienced and disinterested in the guests.
The breakfast is one of the worst hotel breakfasts I have ever had - I might go as far as saying don't bother eating it. There is no fruit on offer, simply some awfully sweet bread, mini club sandwiches and they don't even make coffee to order (cappuccino, lattes, etc.) .. there are simply nescafe sachets and some tea bags and UHT tea milk.
There is a major ant problem at the hotel, and I was bitten numerous amounts of times, no matter how much repellent I applied. The ants were in most of the mugs at breakfast and often in the milk.
We had to ask for separate towels for when we wanted to use the pool, and were given stained towels (great service indeed.) The sun loungers are wooden and extremely uncomfortable, the beach is dirty and not scenic at all.
The bath (cannot be called a jacuzzi...false advertising at its best) took about 2 and a half/3 hours to fill up and even then it was not warm and the jets worked sporadically.
The taxi service they offer is supposed to be 50 baht, yet when we wanted to go somewhere else for dinner it was raised to 400 baht there and back.
Don't bother with the massage... the lady who came to the room was texting with one hand for most of my massage and i couldn't have felt less relaxed. The massage was supposed to be 400 baht, but it was 600 baht.
The room is big and impressive, as is the bathroom, and the bed would have been great were it not for the ants sometimes lurking in the sheets.
I hope it was this disappointing due to it being low season... I'm not sure where all this great reviews come from.
