We’d been on the road for a few days, and our earlier (pre-booked) stays had not quite lived up to our expectations. We’d actually moved out of one almost immediately and gone somewhere else at extra expense, and the place we moved to was not great either but we had limited choice at that point.
Coming off a very full day of travelling up to Cape Reinga and seeing some of the beautiful side beaches, we were tired, and a bit apprehensive about what that night would bring in terms of accommodation – which we hadn’t pre-arranged because of our previous experience. We wanted to see, touch and feel a place before confirming. And we’re glad we did, because the first couple of places we looked at sounded great but simply didn’t match up when we looked inside, for various reasons.
So when we found Beach Lodge with a vacancy sign, we thought it looked nice enough from the outside but we were prepared for disappointment once again.
A genuinely warm welcome from our potential hostess was a great start. And when we saw inside we took it without hesitation. You usually get an instinct about a place immediately, and that was the case here. But as the evening wore on we just kept finding details that confirmed our instinct over and over.
The apartment (for it’s way better than a motel unit) is roomy, and decorated in such a relaxing way that it feels like home even if it’s nothing like where you live normally. Well equipped modern kitchen that encouraged us to pop out to the local store (a short walk away) and make dinner ourselves instead of the expense of a restaurant.
A bedroom that managed to feel expansive and comfortable. A generous bathroom with a large shower – and a shower head that adjusted enough for a tall guy like me. It’s so nice not to have to bend down to rinse my hair. Quality cosmetics too.
The upstairs bedroom is way big enough to be a second master bedroom as well, and one could easily push the two singles together and sleep another couple there.
Nice lounge too. All in all there was enough room for two couples to unpack into wardrobes and cupboards and spend a week here. (We were only one couple here for one night).
And we haven’t even mentioned the view!! And what an outlook – generous deck off lounge and bedroom, lovely big outdoor table (we ate breakfast there). And the sea is right there. A path down the side leads to a stairway that puts you right onto the golden sands of Coopers Beach.
There was a slight hum of traffic because the main road is metres away, but it was far from intrusive.
This was a little more than the budget we had set ourselves but it was worth every cent. We wished we had stayed here the previous night as well and we will definitely stay here again should the opportunity arise.
