Casa Catherwood, a restored mansion in downtown Merida that houses an exhibition of views of ancient monuments in Central America, Chiapas and Yucatan by Frederick Catherwood, has an Italian bistro in the terrace and patio level. The Chef is Luca Cuturi, a classically trained Italian immigrant to Mexico, who used to run the highly-acclaimed Iguana Blanca restaurant. Serving contemporary Italian fare -- including delicacies such as Mozzarella di Bufala -- this is a reasonably priced bistro serving consistently exquisite dishes. Great for travelers who want to take a break from Mexican and globalized fast foods, this is a favorite among the ex-pat communities in town -- Americans, Canadians, French, Italian, Cuban and South Africans who live in Merida year round. They deliver to residents and Bed & Breakfasts in the downtown area, and their telephone number is: (999) 240-8858.
