Since San Miguel is located in a mountainous region, it is not surprisingly full of uneven roads and surfaces. Most roads are paved, but that doesn't always mean smooth sailing. The "pavement" often consists of cobblestones, which can be quite uneven. The town is best explored on foot. Using strollers and wheelchairs is impractical given the road and pathway surfaces.
Personal and/or rental cars are more of a burden than a convenience in San Miguel. The streets are narrow and parking is practically non-existent. Take a shuttle from the Leon/Bajío airport or the bus from Mexico City and walk or use taxis and buses while in San Miguel. Taxis are not metered and the standard fare is $25 pesos (more at night or to outlying areas, double to call a cab). Local bus fares are a flat $5 pesos.
