The Big Nickel is the world's largest coin. It is a giant reproduction of a 1951 Canadian nickel, measuring 9 meters (30 feet) in diameter. The original circulating 1951 nickel coins on which it is modelled, were specially designed and struck by the Royal Canadian Mint to commemorate the 200th anniversary of the discovery of nickel as an element by a Swedish chemist.
The Big Nickel is located just outside of the Dynamic Earth attraction, and access to the giant sculpture is free. There is a small outdoor playground and picnic area nearby, and interpretive walking trails in the immediate area. Parking at the Big Nickel will cost you five dollars.
Dynamic Earth is a large science centre which focuses on earth sciences and mining. It is operated as part of Science North.
