The closest airport to Syracuse is in Catania, about an hour to the north. The airport is large and is a destination for many major airlines including Air France, Delta, Alitalia, British Airways, Lufthansa and more. To get from the airport to Syracuse, a bus service known as Alibus shuttles visitors back and forth to the train station. From there you can arrange travel to Syracuse.
The train station is about a ten minute walk west of the historic center of the city. From here you can take a train to mainland Italy (Rome, Naples) via Catania and Messina and then taking the train ferry across the strait of Messina. Otherwise, you can take local trains to other cities on the island of Sicily. Travel time from Naples to Syracuse is about nine to ten hours.
It is also possible to take a bus to other major cities on Sicily, as well as to smaller, local towns.
If you are spending a lot of time in Sicily, this is probably the best way to get around, since you don't have to wait around for buses or trains, and you can explore the countryside. You can rent from rental agencies at Catania airport, or at agencies in downtown Syracuse.
