As first time visitors to Bali, here are some impressions. Stay in Seminyak. Good relatively clean area.Breakfast is often included and is not that great. Go out for breakfast. Hire a motorbike if you feel confident. Always wear a helmet. Speeds are low and you will survive as long as you ride carefully. All westerners hurt on motorbikes were young, Get the picture?? The Balinese people are very honest, and you can leave your helmet on the bike with no worries. In fact it is the people that will want you to return again, they are just wonderful.
WiFi is everywhere, even in Hardy's (Food store with souvenirs at marked prices) If you don't feel confident bargaining, then go here to get your souvenirs. WiFi at most restaurants.
Ubud is outstanding as a place to base yourself. Lots of things to do. See the Monkey Forest right in town. Walk the Ubud rice paddys. Found this quite by accident just up the road from Funky Monkey.. A small restaurant is on the walk, (www.dicarik.com) well worth a stop. Allow 1 hour minimum for this stroll.. Naughty Nuri's spare ribs are to die for. A packed small restaurant on the side of the road . What a find! (Just past the Bintang Supermarket on JI. Raya Sanggingan) Only use ATM's for cash withdrawls from Banks... as cards can get skimmed at them. Pick your ATM carefully.
Restaurant in Ubud? The Bridge is hard to beat. Food resonable, wine expensive. In fact any wine in Bali is expensive due to the high tax rate. Drink the local Bintang beer instead.
Stay in JI. Gootama at a small guesthouse (Mai Malu). Cheap and clean, $AUD30 a night for downstairs and $NZ50 for upstairs. The water pressure upstairs was useless. Stay downstairs, much better. Opposite is Robot's Tourist Services. Mr Podank is a great guy to deal with, and the restaurant opposite upstairs needs to be booked at least 2 nights in advance in August. Run by a Frenchwoman, awesome food .
Benoa? For the cooking class at Bumbu Bali, it is worth it. Great "village" to stay at if you don't want to do the big resort's. Great rooms and good value. If the beach is your thing, good luck. Lots of hawkers looking for westerners. Very crowded in August.
Overall a great holiday destination, almost 9 out of 10! (and that's a high rating)
