Ogunquit is about as safe as you can get. In 2004, for example, crime statistics for Ogunquit show that there were zero murders, zero forcible rapes, zero robberies, and zero vehicle thefts. Some crime, however, did occur: three aggravated assaults, six burglaries, and thirty-nine larceny thefts. Given that the population of Ogunquit is only 1,275, the theft number is a little high. Aside from that single stat, the rest of the numbers show the Maine sleepy town to be one of the safest places on the planet.
While it is best not to put too much stock in crime statistics, the ones on Ogunquit are very impressive. Still, a vacation to Ogunquit doesn’t mean “Carry and flaunt a huge wad of cash.” It doesn’t mean “balance a few nuggets of gold on your forehead when you sleep and hope that they are not stolen.” It doesn’t mean “leave the keys to your car in the ignition as well as a very detailed map for how to navigate to the nearest vehicle chop house.” Be reasonable. Be alert. Even though Ogunquit might feel like a fantasy land, the normal vacation rules apply. And don’t forget to enjoy yourself.
