Volcano is a very safe place to visit. Having said this, there are certain precautions that should be taken in order to ensure a smooth trip to this Hawaiian town. Like always, common sense is the most important tool to be used in staying safe.
Avoid walking alone at night. Although this is a general recommendation for any unfamiliar area, it should be followed in Volcano as well. If staying with a group is not an option, and walking is unavoidable, make sure to remain in lighted areas. Walking alone at night is never recommended, especially for women.
When visiting Volcano, there are certain safety issues to consider, which are fairly unique to this area. Although many areas of the volcano are open for the public to explore, there are certain inherent dangers that go along with walking around an active volcano.
It is not healthy to breath volcano fumes. Signs are posted in areas where this is a significant problem, but make sure to pay attention to this issue even in areas without signs.
Do not under any circumstance get near the lava, or attempt to touch or throw anything into it. The lava is extremely hot and very dangerous.
