Staying at Blue Rock Vacations made our “once in a lifetime” trip to Roatan a very special trip to remember. Given the lack of infrastructure in the third world, our primary mode of transportation was by boat. This could have been a challenge that resulted in us staying in the room all week had our hosts John and Deb Malthouse not made themselves and their boat available to us at all times and without complaint. As people who thrive on seeing others have a positive experience on the island, they went out of their way to show us around and introduce us to local restaurants and people that turned out to be treasured memories of our vacation. From kayaking through the mangroves, to an adventurous boat ride around to the other side of the island, to snorkeling in the coral reef.
My girlfriend and I enjoyed privacy in our upstairs apartment and were never approached without our invitation. It was, however, an experience of unprecedented hospitality with John and Deb. They spoke to us like old friends and welcomed us into their life for the week. Having worked many hard years prior to retirement, they are down to earth and facinating world travelers who spent many years living on their boat and sailing around the world.
There were points where we didn't know what to do, where to go, or how to approach a situation in a place so different from home, but they always guided us through with unwavering confidence and a sound knowledge of the island. If you are interested in experiencing "The Real Roatan" this is the place and these are the people to make it happen.
