L'Ancienne Poste (The Old Post Office) is an airy, light and spacious traditional honey-coloured stone house in Beynac-et-Cazenac. Everything you need is right on your doorstep. Gourmet restaurants. Riverside cafés & bars. A boulangerie. A grocery store. A magnificent château. A farmer’s market. Your own private pool. Even an English-speaking doctor. It’s all right here, nestled on one of the loveliest bends of the Dordogne river. THE LOCATION - Beynac-et-Cazenac has been selected as one of the ‘Plus Beaux Villages de France’ (‘the most beautiful villages of France’). This stunningly romantic village, which rises dramatically from the valley floor and was once the home of Richard the Lionheart, will enchant and captivate you at every turn, from its narrow medieval streets lined with soft honey-coloured stone houses to its shops, art galleries and restaurants, not to mention its magnificent Château, perched high atop the cliff, majestically watching over the Dordogne valley since 1150 AD. PROPERTY DETAILS - The main entrance to our home uses the original Post Office doorway and leads directly into the open plan living, dining and kitchen area. The house has 2 master ensuite bedrooms (both have shower rooms along with a basin and toilet in each) and 1 twin ensuite bedroom (with a shower over the bath, as well as a toilet and a basin) – sleeping 7 in total. All 3 bedrooms have ensuite bathrooms. Like the open plan living area, all bedrooms have panoramic views over the Dordogne river and towards the surrounding 4 châteaux of Castelnaud, Fayrac, Marqueyssac & Lacoste. There are two sunny south-facing terraces, one next to the kitchen with magnificent Dordogne river & châteaux views, the second one at pool side, with a summer kitchen and gaz bbq. There are tables & chairs for sunny al fresco breakfasts, afternoon glasses of wine, or shaded evening meals overlooking stunning scenery and with beautiful sunsets. The Garden Bedroom has an ensuite bathroom, two single beds & medieval stone archway with French doors opening onto the south-facing garden. The Balcony Bedroom has an ensuite bathroom, a king-size bed & double French doors giving panoramic views of the valley below. The Vaulted Bedroom has an ensuite bathroom, a king-size bed as well as an antique ‘sleigh’ bed. It also has a beautiful vaulted beamed ceiling along with a ceiling fan. There is 3.5x5m 1.30m deep private pool, facing the theatral view . The pool is heated from april to october and have sun loungers & chairs. The whole house is over 4 levels and there is private parking right next to the house (for small and medium size cars) LOCAL ACTIVITIES - You can do it all here and leave your car in the garage for the week! Or you could use it as your holiday base to explore the region. The ‘must see’ medieval town of Sarlat. The prehistoric cave paintings at Lascaux. The Michelin-starred restaurants of Trémolat. There's the walled medieval village (also known as a ‘bastide’) village of Domme. The legendary vineyards of Bergerac, Bordeaux and St Emilion. All this and more are within easy reach! For those in need of relaxation, we recommend lazily drifting down the Dordogne in your own canoe. Discover lush green pastures perfect for picnics. Stop off for wild swimming from riverside beaches. And for the more active, there’s cycling, walking, kayaking, tours of the castle, even hot air ballooning. All of this is just a short stroll from the front door of L'Ancienne Poste. In nearby towns like Sarlat (less than a 15-minute drive away) culture vultures and fans of gastronomy will enjoy art exhibitions, street theatre, music and food festivals, firework displays and outdoor dining in award-winning restaurants. There truly is something for everyone, whatever their age, whatever the season. LOCAL CUISINE - No part of France is so impassioned by its culinary heritage as the deeply gourmet idyll of Dordogne in the rural south-west. Dining has its soul around the kitchen table & the best gastronomic experiences remain traditional feasts lasting several hours. Duck is the staple. Consider magret de canard (duck breast) or confit de canard (slow-cooked duck confit). Duck or goose liver is fattened to become foie gras, served raw and thinly sliced, pan-fried and warm, or with toasts as a pâté. It's said that the local walnuts date back over 17,000 years. There's even a local museum dedicated to them! Fresh black truffles woo food lovers from mid-December to March. People travel to the Dordogne to see artwork created before the dawn of civilization, but they end up feeling like you've touched down in the most civilised place on earth. More

The location is amazing - the property looks out over the river and the valley beyond. Restaurants on your doorstep (great for us lazy gastronomes) and there's a pool - what more can you want? It was family-friendly (indeed it's owned by a young family) but would also be great for a group of friends. Highly recommend if you want a taste of the good life.

We spent an incredible week in the Old Post Office and could not have found a more wonderful place to base ourselves as we toured the region. The house is beautiful and very conveniently located with amazing views and everything you could need. Can’t recommend it highly enough!

Glorious location with sweeping views of the Dordogne. Walking distance to retaurants and shops. Three good size double bedrooms. Good wifi, no A/C but fans in the bedrooms. Not so clean, had to declog a shower on arrival, BBQ needed a thorough clean before use and vacuum cleaner had definitely seen better days. Pool turned green and although this was fixed the pool really needs a better filter as birds sit on a wire directly above the pool and do what birds do (they also fly into the house if you leave the lounge door open). Consequently we didn’t get much use from the pool. The range cooker is good but does tend to trip the electrics; the fridge and dishwasher are both quite small for family use. I advise parking in the village as the road to the property is very tight. For us it fell short of expectations but it is an old and charming property so I can see why other people may enjoy more than we did.

Dear JonnersB. We’re very sorry the house didn’t meet your expectations. We also appreciate the honesty of your feedback, it’s valuable to us and something we will learn from. In the short term, we have shared your comments with our property management team. In the long term, we are embarking on a series of works and refurbishment of the house, which will add to the property’s charm. Thanks once again, Liz

When we travelled to the Dordogne region for the first time this July we wanted to stay somewhere which would give us the maximum ideal Dordogne experience. When we saw Liz and Matt's cover photo on this site showing the view down the steep terraces of Beynac over the bend in the river we knew that L'Ancienne Poste would be just the place. The house is gorgeous and is set over three floors , the sitting room is large , comfortable and beautifully restored with its sandstone finished walls and high beamed ceiling. There are three large bedrooms all wonderfully appointed with really comfy beds and lovey linen all with en-suites. The windows in all the rooms face the river and when the shutters are opened up the serenity and ambience of that incredible view is just fantastic. The immediate region offers lots of things to do . We loved Canoeing down the river early morning , visiting the many underground prehistoric caves and even hot air ballooning . Le Petit Tonnelle was a great recommendation , definitely the best restaurant in the town of Beynac.....and Liz and Matts property is a beautiful luxury to spoil yourself in, whilst on holiday and was definitely the best accommodation in the town. Also, we didn't quite sample all the Bordeaux wines so we'll be back.

The Ancienne Poste offers an ideal base to explore the chateaux, caves and gardens of the Dordogne region. A bonus is that markets and restaurants are within walking distance. Highly recommended.

Our group of five retirees stayed 6 nights at this fantastic old stone house in incredibly picturesque Beynac. We had amazing views of the Dordogne river and the countryside--we could see chateaux across from us, the river in front of us, and hot air balloons floating by us. The house itself is very comfortable, each large bedroom with ensuite bath is on a separate level, affording us a lot of privacy. The beds were comfortable and the bathrooms are modern and well-equipped (we especially appreciated the towel heaters). There are a couple of lovely terraces to relax and eat on. The living room and kitchen are large enough and cozy, and fairly well equipped. Since we were there in April, we had some rainy days, and we were quite content hanging around the house, staying warm with the radiators going. We did manage to blow the main fuse when we had all the heaters on at the same time as the oven, but were quickly instructed by the caretaker, Steve, on how to reset it. The garage is a little tricky, but we got up the hill and parked two cars with no problem. We were driving a Peugeot 2008 and had to fold the mirrors in at the narrowest point--we wouldn't drive anything much wider. One thing to note: if you do end up driving up to the house, make sure you drive back down the same way, the road continuing on past the house is fairly impassable and very very steep!

The most perfect holiday home. Amazing house, amazing views and amazing location. Just a 5 minutes walk from Beynac-et-Cazenac Castle, and from local shops and restaurants. Liz and Matt were super hosts, very easy to communicate. They left us some food and wine, knowing that we will arrive late, The house is fully equipped, very convenient and warm. Even better than the pictures. I would surely return and will warmly recommend to everyone, best house we’ve ever had.

What an amazing location! We were just waiting for a knight on a white steed to appear. An excellent house. There are three bedrooms - two are very big indeed. Each has an en-suite bathroom. The lounge area is comfortable and we enjoyed being able to watch TV as well as DVDs while we were there. Liz and Matt were responsive to our questions before and during the stay - very helpful indeed. We went to three restaurants within walking distance of the house - all provided high-quality food. However, there is plenty of equipment in the kitchen in the house if you want to cook at home too. We arrived at the end of the season and were pleased to find small local shops that were still open (small supermarket, butcher and bakery). There are also gift shops and an off-licence. We hired a private taxi for a couple of days and visited caves to see the cave drawings and on the second day we went wine tasting - both were really enjoyable. On other days we drove out to nearby towns. We also went on a boat tour which sets off from the village. Beautiful place to stay.

Xanthe & Hamish, We were one of those "mature couples" in the earlier review... lol What can we say? Stunning? Perfect? Splendid? So many superlatives... but, all true. For those reading... if you want to wake up to the whoosing sound of balloons filling with hot air then gently floating down the Dordogne by your window... or, enjoy an evening meal prepared in a really nice, modern kitchen served on your veranda overlooking the Dordogne to an incredible sunset - every night - to more balloons floating by... or, be refreshed after a long day of sightseeing at the local castles, towns, chateaus or gardens by taking a dip in the pool - also overlooking the Dordogne... or, take a stroll up the steep rues to the Beynac castle overhead or the charming little village with restaurants below... Then, this is that place! Magnifique!
