We stayed in the location for four weeks. It is right near the centre of town, walking distance to a wonderful market and boulangeries. My husband and I have completely different tastes: I was ready to read as many books as possible and he went out riding his bike. In between we explored surrounding towns, went to buy my favourite wine from Saint Croix du Mont, visited several Emmaus centres, went to a concert in the town centre. We enjoyed several local restaurants, and decided our favourite was within walking distance ... wonderful! We enjoyed ourselves so much we are returning in 2023 for another four weeks.

Thanks so much for sharing how the town and surrounding areas cater to different tastes and interests! There's so much to do if you want to chill out but also loads to explore and it sounds like you had the best of both worlds! We can't wait to welcome you back in 2023!

Ideally located in the of picture-postcard town of Nerac, half-way between Bordeaux and Toulouse, Maison de la fontaine is the perfect place to enjoy a relaxing holiday. Quaint buildings characterize Nerac, with fine restaurants within walking distance or a short drive to the surrounding countryside. The Maison is well- appointed, with everything you need for a comfortable stay - full dining area, two bedrooms and two bathrooms and a nice patio for drinks or a home prepared meal. A little further afield are the beautiful cities of Bordeaux and Toulouse and the great wine country of the Medoc, with the charming towns of St. Estephe, Pauillac, St. Julien and Margaux and on the other side of the Dordogne, St. Emilion, rated by some as the most beautiful town in France. Can't wait to get back.

We spent two weeks in Nerac at this fully-equipped, centrally-located home. It is within walking distance of everything, including the canal, stone bridges, museums, parks, historic churches and of course restaurants and local shopping. (and if you are there on a Saturday, a huge outdoor market is a 5 minute walk away). We enjoyed all the features of this home and especially the patio. We sampled all the food and wine the French are know for. We also joined the locals in playing Petanque at the square just up the street. Would highly recommend!

We had planned our stay at this house three years ago for May of 2020. Covid intervened twice to delay our plans but we finally got there. The village is beautiful and full of natural and architectural interest. We got to attend the great Saturday morning market and make a picnic lunch on our first day, sitting in the shade as pictured in the cover photo. The market had everything we could want. We interspersed walks in and around the village, down and up the river, and to the belvedere overlook, with day and half day trips to the surrounding area. The market is just around the corner and there is a Carrefour in easy walking distance for more mundane needs. Parking was a snap and just a few dozen yards away if you have a car. We made it to Arcachon and Bordeaux, and also Pau and Beynac on different days. We had several beautiful meals in the village with interesting and comfortable evening walks after dinner. This is a great base for relaxation in and of itself, but also a hub to see Southwestern France. It was so great to have a kitchen and bathrooms and a place to read or watch TV at the end of the day, not to mention a glass of wine or champagne in the shade in the afternoon. I highly recommend this in your plans. Mardi and Neil would not steer you wrong.

I booked this house as I was taking two culinary courses nearby and didn’t want to stay three weeks in a hotel. The reviews are understated! This comfortable home, if that is what you are looking for, is a home. I lived like a local and was able to experience Nérac and the region as a local. I have lived in Germany, U.K. and Italy for over 15 years and there I had my own apartment, in southwest France. Mardi, your host, will ensure that you have everything you need and how to get in touch to obtain help if you need it. She is quick to answer emails and texts if you have a question or concern. Though by myself, this home could have easily slept six. The neighbors (both French and Scottish) are friendly and helpful. You are a short walk from the heart of Nérac, with restaurants, bars, markets, boulangeries and a host of other places to find food and drink. All the service listed on the website work, Wi-Fi, international phone, washer, dryer, dishwasher, etc. The kitchen is well equipped (this coming from me, a Chef), should you want to prepare meals. You are located in a “hidden gem” part of France that is not yet discovered by the hordes of tourists. I have traveled most of Europe, but this region was off my radar. It won’t be in the future, there is so much to see, taste, drink and do, and Mardi has a host of tour books, maps and guides available. An excellent three weeks in a beautiful region of France.

We very much enjoyed our stay! The house was fantastic. The house was fully equipped, clean and well maintained. It was centrally located and we had a very relaxing time riding bikes around Nerac and walking through the town and along the river. We enjoyed the cafes, restaurants, small town stores and la cigale chocolates. The house is next to a square where locals play boule and there is a boule set in the house. We took a boat cruise along the river and also enjoyed day trips to Agen and Bourdeaux through the French countryside. The owners checked in on us during our stay and their book in the house full with information and recommendations for everything was very helpful. A perfect week in Nerac!

Spent a wonderful week in Nérac recently with friends and would highly recommend Maison de la Fontaine as a base for anyone looking for an authentic experience living in a small French town. Easily accessible from Agen by bus with a stop at the end of the street. The house is very well appointed and your hosts have thought of everything...and I mean EVERYTHING...you could possibly need for a relaxing stay! From a well stocked picnic basket to umbrellas to plastic wine glasses for the weekly night market to welcome goodies in the fridge upon arrival and more. We felt immediately at home! And if that isn’t enough — we really appreciated Mardi’s wealth of knowledge of the area before and during our stay. She was always quick with a recommendation or suggestion and never steered us wrong! I can’t say enough about this lovely home away from home. It was definitely the highlight of my holiday in France!

If you’re looking for a home away from home, then this place is for you. Live like a local and experience all the hidden gems that surround the beautiful area of south-western France. Mardi, our attentive host, makes everyone feel special and has made sure that you have everything you need during your stay. She is very quick to reply to questions. Our family of 5 adults were very comfortable for our week in La Maison de la Fontaine. Clean and well-appointed, this charming home is steps from bakeries, restaurants, a museum and walking/biking paths. We had a short drive to get our main groceries. WiFi Service was excellent, even on the cozy patio. We found this neighbourhood to be friendly and cheerful which helped to make wonderful memories for all of us. Cheers!

We throughly enjoyed our home away from home for one week. All the comforts of a well equipped kitchen , best sleeps and safe neighbourhood! The location was within walking distance to the shops, restaurants and markets and the most beautiful canopied park. It was was so nice to go off and explore the Gascony region for the day and to return to a lovely accommodation. We will hopefully be returning!

Did you watch Chocolat and wish you could live somewhere as authentic as that? Well Maison de la fontaine will allow you to live out all those fantasies and more! We were two couples celebrating our 30th Wedding anniversaries and decided to spend it in Nerac. We completely fell in love with the town and everything about this little gem. Opening the shutters each morning to bright blue skies, white fluffy clouds over head, church bells ringing and water running from a nearby fountain was what greeted us every day. We walked to all the shops, enjoyed time at the water, sipping on a late afternoon beer or rose. We loved chatting to the people tying up their boats for the evening. We enjoyed moonlight walks at night where it was just us and the local cats wandering. The house was perfect for the two couples. We loved the owner's collection of cookbooks (in English) as we spent most dinners in and loved to cook. The kitchen was well equipped - even a few cooking essentials were provided. The neighbours next door were delightful and we even had a challenging game of Petanque in the square one evening. The owners provided a great book so every question you might have had was answered. We also enjoyed country walks and hikes that we could do just from the front door of Maison de la fontaine without having to get in the car. If you are looking for a "live like a local" experience, then this house is the place to be!

About the neighbourhood
Nérac itself has everything you could need even if you don’t have a car – apart from (what we think is) the best Saturday market in the region, there are two big waterparks closeby and the gorgeous Parc de la Garenne – where you can walk, ride bikes or have a picnic along the river. You can rent canoes, kayaks and paddleboats or take a leisurely cruise on the river Baïse close to the house. Nérac hosts an animated (and delicious!) local summer night market (always a good time) which is located is about 2 blocks from the house. Nérac is easy to get to by train from Paris, or a quick drive by car from Bordeaux or Toulouse. It’s also a convenient “home base” location for trips to Bergerac, Bordeaux, the coast and even Spain is just a couple of hours away. Further afield, the Mediterran...
