Our vacation rental is a former farmhouse, a so-called 'Kaakberg' in the countryside near Edam, only 15 miles from Amsterdam! The Kaakberg is beautiful located in the countryside near Edam, an old 'cheese' town, with views on the lake and 'polders'. It is very comfortable for 4 persons. There are two separate bedrooms, one with a double bed and one with two separate beds, and we have 2 sofa beds in the living room to accommodate 2 more persons, if necessary. Please ask. We can add children beds. Children under 5 are free if they sleep in the childrens beds we can provide (one for max. 5 and one for max. 3 years old). The rental includes lots of extra's free of costs, like bikes, private sauna, private outdoor spa, parking and free internet (wireless). Welcome in Holland!

We have had wonderful time in this beautiful home. The house has three floors; from the window in the bedroom (the upper floor) you can watch both the sunrise and the sunset. During the day we have admired a few kitesurfers in the Ijselmeer, just in front of the house (by the way you fall asleep to the sound of the waves). The house has been arranged with extreme attention to detail. Amsterdam is only 30 minutes away by car. Saskia and her husband are great, attentionate and discreet hosts. This is both a great romantic getaway for couples as well as for families or friends who want to chill in the garden in the evening.

Country & Lake was the ideal place to spend a relaxed week in the countryside. With magical views over the Ijsselmeer and the farmlands and dykes around Edam, this haven is beautifully appointed and maintained with every necessary convenience. What a wonderful place to wake up in the morning! The position is very quiet, with only the gentle sounds of the birds and sheep to disturb your sleep. Walking and reading are natural pursuits here, but there are some good places to eat in nearby Edam, and it is a short bus ride to the centre of Amsterdam if you want to enjoy the bustle and stimulation of the city as well. Saskia and Onny are brilliant hosts, thoughtful and welcoming, with excellent attention to all the details that make the difference in quality, and also giving guests the space to make their time their own. Their communication was excellent and all the necessary maps, brochures, tourist information and other details are provided, as well as good speed internet. The space itself is both simple and luxurious. The private spa with sauna, hot tub and space for some yoga is great for unwinding whatever the weather, and the well-appointed kitchen/dining room has everything you need to make self-catering a breeze. The upstairs bedroom is spacious and welcoming with a most comfortable bed, and lovely linen, and of course the spectacular views in all directions! You won't want to close your curtains. The downstairs bedroom, with access to separate bathroom facilities is useful if you need to house a family rather than simply a couple. I would certainly highly recommend this beautiful, well-maintained property to anyone wanting a quiet time out in the countryside, where they can feel pampered and special.

The Kaakberg is a beautifully appointed quiet home across the road from the historic dike of Ijsselmeer, and looking onto fields of sheep and cattle. The nearby town of Edam is just half an hour by bus to Amsterdam, and so one can elect to enjoy the attractions of the city or stay home to relax. A perfect place for a creative retreat. Highly recommended.

It was our first visit to Holland and were so happy we stayed here. We rode bikes to the nearby villages, spent time across the street at the beach and enjoyed watching the farm animals that are almost in their backyard. My daughter who is 9 loved petting the horse who had just had a foal. They have a cat, Fred who paid us a daily visit:) The owners were away so their nephew was very helpful when we had questions. The home was very clean and well decorated. It is three stories so there is plenty of room. The home and surrounding gardens did not disappoint. I honestly have no complaints, it was a wonderful vacation and we really enjoyed our stay here!!

For the past 12 years, we have travelled every year and have rented a house in some part of Europe. Country & Lake is by far the BEST rental we have stayed in. There is no doubt that we will be back next year.My husband and I spent the first week in April in the 3-level barn-house. The views are stunning. The view from the living room area (2nd floor) overlooks the wetlands (green-green fields), which we found to be incredibly peaceful and relaxing to watch. We loved to see the ducks, geese and other interesting birds flying around, feeding (and nesting, apparently) in the field. The farmer next door has horses, a pony and sheep, which hang-out in right in front of the huge picturesque windows. There were lambs this time of the year and it was really entertaining to watch them run around (they reminded us of puppies; following one another, tearing back-and-forth). The view from the master bedroom on the 3rd floor overlooked the Lake, which offered a whole different perspective and reminded us of how inventive the Dutch have been, managing the sea! The lower level offers a sauna and a really wonderful spa-type room, which I really enjoyed sitting in late afternoon, when the sun streamed in. In addition to the gorgeous views, we enjoyed watching the children bicycling to school every morning and the enthusiastic cyclists who used the country road, also visible from the 2nd floor living room area. The house has ALL the conveniences and was spectacularly clean and comfortable. Onny and Saskia are warm hosts (and Fred, their cat), always ready to help. The area is charming and there is a lot to explore; the local stores, supermarkets, bakeries and general feel is very rural. Oh, and the very narrow bridges can prove quite challenging by car (it helps to have mirrors that retract), although there were other routes to avoid the village bridges. While the property is secluded (which we look for in a property), it was easy to be in the throng of community and navigate the small towns. It was very easy to get into Amsterdam by car (although I understand that transportation by bus is also very easy to manage). After our week at Country & Lake, we boarded a 10 day Viking River Cruise with stops in The Netherlands and Belgium. The cruise was truly wonderful, but my husband and I both agree: if we were to do it over, we would have preferred to spend our 2 and 1/2 week vacation staying-put, in Warden at THIS property. Thanks, Saskia and Onny!

We spent a week at Country and Lake and found it very relaxing. We are a family of 4, 2 adults and two teenagers, 15 and 19. The apartment is located within cycling distance of Edam. It was very clean and well furnished with fresh flowers in the lounge and bedroom on our arrival. The views from the master bedroom are fantastic with windows on every side. Lovely to watch the sunrise over the lake and sunset over the fields. We had use of the hot tub and sauna which is a shared area but we did not see anyone else in this space whilst we were there. The outside area was beautiful with far reaching views. There are horses and cows/calfs in the surrounding fields. The farmer trains his horse whilst the sun is setting which is a lovely way to spend the evening. The garden is very green with many flowers and both relaxing wooden arm chairs and a large table and chairs to eat at. One slight criticism would be that there is only one large bed and the other two beds were sofa beds which were fine for the children but if it was four adults sharing the space it would have been a problem. Edam is a beautiful town, and we did think it was the prettiest place that we visited although the other towns are lovely too. We went on a windmill drive which was very interesting. The food in the Netherlands is very good and both the adults and teenagers found it delicious. Bringing some Edam cheese home is a must! Overall, a lovely relaxing stay and I would highly recommend Saskia & Onny's apartment. They are friendly and helpful on arrival and during the stay. The weather when we stayed in Edam was fantastic... Hot and sunny, with only one half day of rain. If you want to see photos and are on Instagram check out my gallery... xyrisrae

Thank you for your nice review. From 2014 we have added a seperate second bedroom, downstairs. So four adults can sleep now very comfortable. There are still two sofa beds if you want to come with two more people.

If you have ever wanted to try life in a tower, stay here. The third floor bedroom has windows on all four sides with fantastic views and lots of clean breezes rushing through. The high ceiling makes it even airer. From the second floor, you can enjoy vistas of horses and cows and canals. This is big sky country with clouds racing overhead and green fields below. A neighboring farmer trains horses. The kitchen and living room are on this level, so we did most of our living here. The kitchen is fine for stovetop cooking, but the oven seems microwave. Ground floor has a private bathroom that was much appreciated as well as a sauna that leads to a patio with a hot tub. One fine night, we had dinner on the patio. To sum up, this place has many positives. The setting and nice architecture, as mentioned before. Also, the owners are genial and interesting, directors of a local theatre group. They picked us up at the Edam bus station and provided us with a bit of starter food which was helpful. We got around on bikes which they provided. We purchased most of our food in Edam at the local small shops. One evening when we were out on the patio, we had some conversations (in English). Otherwise, they were either at work or invisible. If you want proximity to Amsterdam, it is a twenty minute bus ride from Edam. Drawbacks: My husband did not like the bathroom that joined the bedroom because it didn't feel private enough. He used the first floor bathoom.I didn't mind, and liked the big bathtub. This place has lots of stairs, as do most places in Holland. If stairs are a problem, stay away. If you rent the extra apt, as we did for our friend who was traveling with us, it is older and does not have the light, airy feeling. She spent most of her time in the nicer apt with us. Finally, it rained and stormed most days of our visit in late June. I think it was abnormal, but maybe this part of Holland has terrible weather. Hard to say.

Thank you for your nice review. The joined bath room in the second bedroom was kept open to see the architecture of the kaakberg roof, which is beautiful to see. We can understand it is not so private, but that was the choice. From 2014 we have added a seperate second bedroom, downstairs. So four adults can sleep now very comfortable. There are still two sofa beds if you want to come with two more people, The other apartment is not rented out anymore.

About the neighbourhood
There is a quiet beach where you can swim in the lake. It has a big terrace to dine outside. This is a very beautiful place for a honeymoon, a wedding anniversary, for writing, for reading a good book (books available too in different languages!) but if you like to be more active: there are lots of opportunities to explore the countryside by foot, bicycle or by car. It is a great place for bird watching and if you like horses you can watch the neighbor training his horses at sunset. The area is very safe and we have a place to park your car.
Getting around
There are lots of opportunities to explore the countryside.Besides Edam and Amsterdam there are lots of interesting places nearby, like all the historical fisherman's places around the lake, Volendam, Hoorn, Enkhuizen etc. You can make daytrips to the North Sea, to the bulb fields or Keukenhof to see the tulips in full bloom (April), Friesland and Hindelopen. Everyone who likes to be in the countryside and at the same time near Amsterdam and many other interesting places in Holland will enjoy this place.
