Cehegin
'El Lentiscar' is a handsome two-towered villa built in 2007, nestled on a hillside, in a six thousand m² landscaped plot, with olive trees, five hundred m² of marble flagstones, a four x ten m private pool, outdoor kitchen/barbecue/shower room/spare room, and spectacular views across the valley of the Quipar and Argos rivers to the town of Cehegín (pop. fifteen thousand) and the imposing five-thouisand-metre peaks above Caravaca de la Cruz. The main house is laid out on a spacious open plan, with a kitchen area, dining area, and living area with broad open fire, sofas and flatscreen TV/DVD player. There is a large family bathroom, with shower/bath, vertical radiator, and a modernist ensuite to the master bedroom, which has French windows to the main patio/garden area (ideal for a midnight swim!). Interaction with guests
We live in the UK, but visit the property ourselves regularly with our children. We know many people in the town and work with a lovely couple, Orlando and Glenda, who look after the house and garden and liaise with guests when they visit. But you are left 100% in peace!

About the neighbourhood
Historians have connected the name Cehegín with that of a North African tribe, which invaded Spain in the 11th century. Cave paintings at Peña Rubia, a few kilometers outside the town, show the area was settled during pre-historic times; the same area is rich in fossils for amateur palaeontologists. The ancient town of Begastri, part of the panoramic view the property enjoys, was settled during the later bronze age and was an important town during the time that the region was occupied by the Romans and the Visigoths. With the arrival of the Moors, the town proper shifted to its present location at Cehegin. Rich conquistadores returning from South America built large and imposing houses in the 'Casco Antiguo' (Old Town), many of which have been tastefully renovated in recent years.... more

How to get there
Airport: San Javier: 100.0 km
Railway: Calasparra (main line to Madrid-Murcia): 20.0 km
Fly-and-drive with a range of budget air companies to: Alicante (hundred and forty km) or San Javier (Murcia San Javier; or MSJ; a hundred km). (Easyjet flights to Madrid are the best value of all, and involve a three to four hour drive, perhaps with a night in the capital to start or finish, depending on flight times.)
From the San Javier, follow the MU, then the first RM; Autovia del Noroeste to Cehegin, allowing an hour and a half for the trip. Take first exit, signed Cegehin Este; and follow signs for town centre, stopping outside the Mercadona supermarket on the long straight approach road into town, called the Carretera de Murcia; You'll be met on arrival by our contracted Spanish-speaking helper, Glenda. She'll show you to the house (five minutes).
