Parking outside the house and outside facilities for bicycles and golf clubs. Dogs and children are welcome. From Inverness to Brora, follow the signs for the A9 for 60 miles (approx 1hr 20mins driving time). When you arrive in Brora continue driving a further half mile north through the village. You will then see a sign for Dalchalm. Follow the sign cross over the railway line and continue driving to the very last house. This is the Paddock. Castle of Mey Travel 55 miles north of Brora and located between Thurso and John O'Groats, the castle looks out to sea across the Pentland Firth. Built as a Z-plan castle between 1566 and 1572 by the fourth Earl of Caithness, it was bought from Captain Imbert-Terry by the Queen Mother in 1952 (after her husband died). The castle was then in a state of disrepair and renovation work was required. In September 1996 she handed the castle, its 2000 acre estate and her prize-winning herd of Aberdeen Angus over to a charitable trust to make their future secure. The gardens were one of her favourite places and it is said that she often used to head straight Dunrobin Castle Dunrobin Castle is the most northerly of Scotland's great houses and the largest in the Northern Highlands with 189 rooms. Dunrobin Castle is also one of Britain's oldest continuously inhabited houses dating back to the early 1300s, home to the Earls and later, the Dukes of Sutherland. The Castle, which resembles a French chateâu with its towering conical spires, has seen the architectural influences of Sir Charles Barry, who designed London’s Houses of Parliament, and Scotland’s own Sir Robert Lorimer. The Castle was used as a naval hospital during the First World War and as a boys’ boarding school from 1965 to 1972. Dunrobin Castle is on the east coast which lies south of Brora, overlooking the Moray Firth, just north of the villages of Golspie and of Dornoch (famous for its cathedral and Royal Dornoch Golf Club). Dunrobin Castle is open annually from 1st April to 15th October. Other Activities: Shooting during the season, Golf: The Course Gleneagles may be more glamorous, Carnoustie more prestigious. It is Brora which is the most northerly golf memorial to James Braid in his native Scotland. Brora is also the headquarters of the James Braid Golfing Society, and while its President, Peter Thomson, and fellow member Ronan Rafferty annually enthuse, the club golfer, the bedrock of the game, will derive equal pleasure and satisfaction from Brora's 6110 yards. Given 194 acres of Scottish links land to work on, what in 1923 was entitled 'Braid's Plan' is hardly altered. Here the visitor will enjoy the mixture of bent grass and beach sand, burn water and gorse in glorious yellow May bloom. There is even a railway which comes into play from the tenth tee. With the exception of the short sixth, the outward nine holes follow the contour of Kintradwell Bay in the foreground, with a backdrop of the Sutherland foothills from Ben Bhraggie to the west, away to the Ord of Caithness in the north-east. The inward nine holes follow the fence line of the bordering croft land, with out of bounds to concentrate the mind. Of the two short holes, the delightful 13th, Snake, winds back towards the sea, whilst the 18th contains all the concerns of protecting a score against a bunkered green a two hundred yard carry away and under the scrutiny of the clubhouse windows. Other options are available and we are happy to tailor packages to meet you requirements.More

This was the best relaxing holiday we have had in a long time The cottage was perfect for all the family and the dogs The rooms were big so we did not invade other peoples space There were 5 adults myself, wife daughter, son, and 2 grand kids, 4 dogs, (3 chihuahua 's and a border collie so there was plenty walks around the area for them and the beach. The garden was really big but not escape proof for the chihuahua's but it wasn't a big issue as they got used to the garden The owners of the property were very nice and friendly, we would love to visit again

The house is great, very spacious and everything we needed for a group of 6. Very peaceful and the weather was good - used the bbq and patio a few times. It is only a short walk to the beach - water was a bit nippy but thats what you would expect :) There was quite a lot of other activites to do in Brora and other parts of Sutherland: Brora Heritage Walk, Clynelish Distillery, Dunrobin Castle, Castle of Mey, Golspie & Helmsdale. The service was excellent and overall had a great time - will definitely be back!!

We stayed at The Paddock for 7 nights in June 2014. The Paddock is adjacent to The Croft and has ample parking space for 3 cars. The location is perfect, at the end of a long cul-de-sac and where there are grazing fields for sheep/cows adjoining the links golf course and onwards to the beach. The Powells looked after us very well indeed. The house is perhaps from the 70s and is very spacious, especially downstairs. The floor plan is charming with a functional kitchen-diner and a small library/reading room along with a large 'salon'. There's plenty of room for a large group for guests to spread themselves out and get peace and quiet if desired. We had wonderfully warm weather and there's a charming garden with patio table and chairs and we even fired up the BBQ! There are 2 TVs and Wifi, however, as this is a beautiful remote location where peace and tranquility is the order of the day we didn't watch TV much as it seemed to ruin the calm! The upstairs floorplan is adequate with the possibility for 3 doubles (including 2 x twin options) and with 1 large bathroom. There is a shower room/WC downstairs adjacent to the utility room. The only downside and indeed the only noise was from the internal plumbing however we organised ourselves so that no one 'flushed' during the night and no showers early in the morning. This however did not detract at all from our enjoyment and we would still stay again. The Powells were very attentive and thoughtful and we thoroughly enjoyed our visit. Tips: - Annual Brora Village Fete (June 2014) - Coastal drive to Durness (long but worth it) - Visit Dunrobin Castle (falconry, gardens, cafe, great gift shop) - Visit Golspie (charming little village with the Burns) - Visit the Geology Centre at Golspie, it's free and the semi-precious exhibits are wonderful - Visit the Castle of Mey in Caithness (owned by the late Queen Mother) - Visit Helmsdale - Spend a day locally, do the Brora Heritage Walk and visit the local shops - Visit the Loth Train Station Antiques Shop - Visit the Marina Hotel for a sundowner and sit outside in the Garden Room - Visit Clynelish Distillery SHOPPING: Buy groceries at Inverness Airport/Business Retail Centre/Tescos as there is a greater choice than what's on offer locally. This was our 2nd visit to the area and we visited the Heritage Centre to trace some family history. We found everyone in Brora to be very helpful and friendly and there is a real sense that Brora is at a crossroads - there's some wonderful history here and a great stop on route to the Northern Highlands.
