Gairnshiel Cottage (Cobbinshaw) offers delightful recently refurbished holiday accommodation. It is situated between West Calder and Carnwath in the heart of the Scottish countryside but still within 40 minutes drive of two stunning cities – Edinburgh and Glasgow. The views from the cottage are breathtaking: it has a wonderful position on the organic farm of South Cobbinshaw overlooking the Pentland Hills and Cobbinshaw Loch. The road leading to the cottage is a typical uneven farm track that crosses the loch via a causeway adding to the feeling of 'getting away from it all'. It is a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSI) due to wintering wildfowl and is popular with anglers and birdwatchers. For those who enjoy the outdoors but would like to take it a bit easier, fishing on the loch can be organised for you. Nearby Harburn Golf Club is a challenging 18-hole parkland course and there are walks of all levels starting literally on your doorstep, taking in stunning scenery and fascinating history. If shopping and attractions are your thing - the designer shops of Livingston are 15 minutes away and unique little shops and galleries are found in Biggar and Peebles. Not far away is New Lanark World Heritage Village. Surrounded by beautiful native woodland and close to the Falls of Clyde, the 200 year old cotton mill village is Scotland's most important memorial to the Industrial Revolution. Take a stroll along the riverside on one of the woodland walks and experience the outstanding beauty the Falls of Clyde - where the River Clyde cascades 85ft. For those who like to travel a bit further afield the scenic splendours of the Borders, Perthshire, Fife, Loch Lomond and the Trossachs are all within easy reach and make for great day trips.

Amazing
Omg the views and position of this cottage is too die for. We were very lucky with the weather but even so it has everything you need and more. Dogs absolutely loved the walk's, very secure garden for them. We will be back next year.

Fantastic Weekend
Just back from a two night stay in Gairnshiel Cottage with two friends. This was a well earned relaxing couple of days for us and the area, cottage and views helped sooth our stresses. The sky at night is fantastic, well recommended to any astrology lovers. With no light pollution from big city lights it felt like you could touch the stars. Was a beautiful crisp winter day when we went for a lovely walk and found the Fairy Trail on the way into the nearby Woolfords Village. Will definitely be recommending to friends and family. Thank you Dave and Lynda

Beautiful Location
A tastefully decorated cosy cottage in a beautiful location with stunning views of both countryside and loch. Hiring kayaks to use on the loch from the private jetty is a must. The fire pit offers opportunity to stay loch side until the sun goes down whilst toasting marshmallows. The hosts were very welcoming, flexible and amenable. We would confidently recommend this destination for those seeking a truly special place to relax and unwind in peace and tranquillity.

Unbelievable!
I cannot praise this place enough. Having been away from Scotland for two years, I felt right at home here. This is, without a doubt, the best place we have ever stayed. The road to the property is badly damaged but this didn't bother us. The location was beautiful, and the immense solitude you feel is to die for. Cozy, well kitted out, and decorated with soul. Thanks guys. We will be back.... (in a long time).

Infested with spiders
Whilst the cottage itself was very nice, our stay was ruined by spiders constantly dropping from the beams in the main bedroom, they were everywhere, this really dampened what would have otherwise been a lovely cottage.

Hi, we’re sorry to hear that you had a problem with spiders but am rather surprised that it’s taken over 6 months to write this review! You stayed with us in October 2018! It’s the first time that anyone has mentioned having a problem with them. I understand that if you have a spider phobia they can be very frightening but if you had mentioned them during your stay we would have made sure that every spider was taken care of. We apologise for any inconvenience caused.

Restful and relaxing Christmas at this wonderful cottage
We stayed at Gairnshiel Cottage over Christmas and it was the perfect antidote to our busy lives. The cottage itself is cosy but had plenty of room for our family of two adults and two teens. It is surrounded by fields and there are views from every window. The cottage is accessed by heading down a bumpy lane/track and crossing a causeway across the Loch and you really feel as if you are leaving the world behind. The log fire was a real draw for us and the lounge was really comfortable for our lazy nights in and separate dining room was great for family meals. The additional shower room downstairs was a great bonus for a family. The Wi-Fi was a must for the teens and it worked perfectly in all rooms. The kitchen was well stocked and we were able to cook our full Christmas dinner with no problems. The cottage is tucked away off main roads but there is easy access to roads into Livingston and Edinburgh (and also Glasgow). We ventured out for a few days and particularly enjoyed the Royal Brittania (a fantastic tour of the decommissioned Royal yacht) and the Camera Obscura museum (amazing views of the whole city). The shopping at Livingston Outlet Centre was also a hit. Overall, a fantastic break and we would love to return one day.

Peaceful location
What a lovely place Gairnshiel Cottage is, perfect for a quiet and relaxing break. Comfortable and clean and a warm welcome on our arrival. Only thing I wish we had known about was the drive up to the causeway, maybe we wouldn't have had the car cleaned prior to the visit, but it was fun trying to miss the puddles. Would definitely recommend to others.

Beautiful
Gairnshiel Cottage was our ideal little slice of Scotland. There was so much detail and thought put into every nook and cranny that made our rural retreat convenient, comfortable, and exquisitely scenic. We had everything we needed to feel at home yet far away from everything. All the kitchen essentials, a clothes washer, central heating system, and not to mention a very cozy log burner. We’d recommend it to anyone and already have, in fact. Give them a try, you won’t be disappointed.

Overweldigend uitzicht
We hebben uitermate genoten in een uitstekende cottage, een fantastische omgeving met een overmaat aan natuur. Precies hoe we het graag wilden hebben. Een lekkage gaf wat stress, maar verder zeer te spreken!

It is 31.5 miles long and linked to the Forth and Clyde Canal at Falkirk. It closed to commercial traffic in 1933. The Millennium Link project has restored the canals from the Forth to the Clyde. The unique Falkirk Wheel has now replaced the previous connecting locks. Cruise the calm and peaceful Union Canal in comfort on a canal boat trip from the Linlithgow Canal Centre where there is a small museum, a tea room and a picnic area. The Edinburgh Canal Centre at Ratho, nr Livingston offers year round cruises, sightseeing trips and and dinners on canal boats.
