Gairnshiel Cottage (Cobbinshaw) offers delightful recently refurbished holiday accommodation. It is situated between West Calder and Carnwath in the heart of the Scottish countryside but still within 40 minutes drive of two stunning cities – Edinburgh and Glasgow. The views from the cottage are breathtaking: it has a wonderful position on the organic farm of South Cobbinshaw overlooking the Pentland Hills and Cobbinshaw Loch. The road leading to the cottage is a typical uneven farm track that crosses the loch via a causeway adding to the feeling of 'getting away from it all'. It is a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSI) due to wintering wildfowl and is popular with anglers and birdwatchers. For those who enjoy the outdoors but would like to take it a bit easier, fishing on the loch can be organised for you. Nearby Harburn Golf Club is a challenging 18-hole parkland course and there are walks of all levels starting literally on your doorstep, taking in stunning scenery and fascinating history. If shopping and attractions are your thing - the designer shops of Livingston are 15 minutes away and unique little shops and galleries are found in Biggar and Peebles. Not far away is New Lanark World Heritage Village. Surrounded by beautiful native woodland and close to the Falls of Clyde, the 200 year old cotton mill village is Scotland's most important memorial to the Industrial Revolution. Take a stroll along the riverside on one of the woodland walks and experience the outstanding beauty the Falls of Clyde - where the River Clyde cascades 85ft. For those who like to travel a bit further afield the scenic splendours of the Borders, Perthshire, Fife, Loch Lomond and the Trossachs are all within easy reach and make for great day trips.

Great little cottage, only four proper beds in bedrooms though if five of you are going!
Beautiful cottage in an amazing location, having breakfast on the terrace outside overlooking the moorland was fantastic.

entspannter Urlaub
Ein schönes Haus mit einem tollen Ausblick. Das Haus hat alles was Mann bzw. Frau im Urlaub braucht. Einziger Mangel - das zu kleine Badezimmer. Duschen ist nur im Sitzen in der Badewanne möglich.

Home from Home
Being in Edinburgh on a business trip I stayed here 3 weeks. My family also joined me for one of those weeks and we enjoyed the stay. Private and tranquil yet local amenities were a short drive away. Home from home with everything you will need, and the views are stunning. I will be back when I return to Edinburgh with no hesitation.

Beautiful cottage in an excellent location
Loved our stay here; the cottage was really nice and the owners very friendly. Very convenient for Edinburgh Park-and-Ride, I suggest Ingliston and tram. Lots to see and do within an hour and a half's drive North, West, East and South - this time I suggest a Historic Scotland explorer pass as most properties we visited are HS, but there are NT and private places too. Minor downsides, the shower is over bath only and bath takes a while to fill, but you're on holiday, take it easy - what's the rush?! The road up had a few potholes when we stayed but these were caused by the really bad weather the week before so no one's fault and passable quite easily with sensible driving!

Delightful cottage in a lovely rural location
I would highly recommend this location and property for anyone looking for a nice country break in Scotland in the West Lothian area. The cottage is nicely decorated and has a warm comfortable feel. The log burner adds a special touch to the atmosphere during the winter months and the owners put up a lovely Christmas tree and wreath at the entrance. Another bonus is dogs are also welcome providing they are kept on a lead. The only point to highlight is the property isn't really suitable for anyone that needs access to a downstairs toilet facility or struggles with stairs. Other than that its perfect!

Lovely cottage with stunning views
We had a great time in this beautiful cottage. The views were amazing, from the windows we could see over the countryside and the lake. It was very well equipped, everything we needed was there. Lynda was a great host, always at hand if we needed anything. Would recommend to anyone wanting to have some peace and quiet, but still be close enough to the city.

A great way to spend a week in Scotland!
A beautiful setting for a relaxing family vacation. The cottage provides a quiet and comfortable rural setting with easy access for day trips to both Glasgow and Edinburgh either by car, or via the train from the nearby towns of West Calder or Livingston.

A beautiful cottage in a rural location.
If you like your cottage in a rural quiet location this is the place for you. Situated on the far side of Cobbinshaw reservoir over a causeway. Lovely cottage with great views. West Calder is about 15 mins drive away where you can pick up supplies and it has a great train link to Edinborough and Glasgow. Livingston is about another four miles out with lots of shops and places to eat. A well placed cottage for a quiet relaxing vacation but only 45 minutes away from the hustle and bustle of Edinburgh and Glasgow.

taste of Scotland - foreigner's review
I picked up the cottage because of it's classic look, with hope to spend few days in typical Scottish cottage, comfort was not the priority - wasn't disappointed. Surrounding, views, etc. let you feel the country indeed. More information however should be added to the cottage description. On the ground floor the ceiling is very low - you can easily touch it, on the first floor it's Extremely low, just a few inches above the head (I'm ~6 feet tall). The bathroom is not for adults at all, you can stand straight only within a feet from the door and have to slouch to do literally anything inside. The washbasin with two separate faucets for hot & cold water is useless. So I'm happy that I had a chance to spend a week in typical Scottish cottage and also very happy that I've survived the bathroom!

I'm glad you enjoyed your stay and have noted your comments about the ceiling heights in the cottage. All the ceiling heights comply with Building Regulations as the cottage was renovated in 2000. All door heights are standard so although low they are not exceptionally low and adds to the character 'cosy' feel of the cottage. The upstairs rooms are traditionally built into the roof space as can be seen in the pictures on the website. The wash hand basin has a hot tap and a cold tap, as does the bath, both work and therefore I am unsure by what you mean when you say it is useless.
