About the neighbourhood
Castara is situated on the very edge of the luscious, tropical rainforest, half way along the north-coast of the island. A great base from which to explore the rest of the island with the pristine Englishman’s Bay a mere 5 minute drive and the protected Rainforest Reserve a leisurely 20 minutes away. The rainforest gives visitors ample opportunity for hiking, bird-watching or exploring the tropical flora and fauna with a local guide. Castara has two beautiful beaches with an impressive coral reef just metres from the beach allows even inexperienced snorkelers to come face-to-face with majestic angelfish, sea turtles and the friendly stingrays that frequent the bay each afternoon. There is also a beautiful waterfall a short walk away.
Getting around
A bus service runs through the village approximately once every 2 hours and goes to Scarborough (or L’Anse Fourmi in the opposite direction). Bus tickets must be bought before boarding the bus and it costs $5tt to get into Scarborough. Tickets can be bought from any of the small shops that display a ‘PTSC Tickets Sold Here’ sign, or ask any local person. However, to explore the island fully, you really do need a car or taxi. Some activities are better taken with a tour guide or trusted local person - our Manager will be able to provide information about tours and excursions.
