This is our 2nd year staying with Matthew & Jillian and we had a fantastic stay as expected. This year we hired both Al Hambra and La Grange for 3 families, and enjoyed the space between the two. There is everything that you could need for a family holiday, plus the pool and grounds are wonderful for relaxing and/or play time. Matthew and Jillian are super helpful and were always on hand with suggestions of places to visit and eat. There is so much to do around the area from night markets to lakes with water parks and lots of stunning cycle routes. We will be returning.

This is the second consecutive year we have been to this great, family friendly, gite. We can’t rate it highly enough. We rented the whole place for 11 people and still had room to spare. Set in stunning countryside with an amazing pool, this gite will ensure a relaxing holiday with children. Matthew and Jillian could not be more attentive or accommodating. Full of great ideas for great days out, canoeing, horse riding, cycling, historic visits and best off all restaurant recommendations. The night market in Sos on a Wednesday must be tried for a fun evening out for all the family. The fires are well equipped and have plenty of room to dine together either outside or in the large dining room. Bedrooms are comfy and there’s a great room for four children to share and have adventures!! The garden is vast and serves a great place to enjoy nature or the odd game of cricket, football or rounders. There’s a slide and playhouse for little ones to enjoy and plenty of space to have dens, as well as parents finding the odd 10 mins for some deserved quiet time. If you are looking for a fun, yet relaxing break, with friends or family, go, it is a stunning place to make memories. Thank you both x

We have just had a week in Al Hambra, a family of six adults and a baby. We had a brilliant time! Difficult to think of the best thing about it, but it was probably the pool, which was fabulous. Swimming outside or lying on the sun loungers with views over rolling hills, vineyards, forests - what more could you wish for? There was loads of room for six of us not to feel cramped for space - huge dining room table, two lovely lounge areas inside, several outside seating areas, one with a barbecue, for family meals au plain air. (And Fudge and Smudge, two beautiful cats who were only too willing to help clean up leftovers from the barbecue!) Matthew and Jillian couldn’t be more helpful, with great advice on where to eat out. And the fresh loaf and bottle of wine on arrival were much appreciated. Only home a day, and we are missing Al Hambra already!

My wife and I have enjoyed yet another holiday here. This was our third stay and we are already looking forward to returning. It is in a beautiful rural location yet it is within easy reach of lovely places to visit such as Nerac, Agen, Condom, etc. The accommodation itself is excellent and Jillian and Matthew (hosts) are lovely, friendly and helpful. Their children are a delight. We found the holiday really enjoyable, peaceful and relaxing.

It is a fair old journey from Bergerac airport but it's worth it. This is surely rural France at its very best - beautiful, uncomercialised, peaceful, and relaxing. The gite had all the facilities we required and was comfortable, stylish and finished to a high standard. The British proprietors were friendly and helpful. What's not to like?

Spent 10 beautiful days here! Fantastic house - the owners welcomed us upon arrival and gave us useful information about the surrounding area. We are able to visit a number of local towns, markets and summer festivals as well as spend days relaxing around the pool. The rental is in its own huge grounds and the countryside is beautiful so it was the perfect place to take a break. We're already planning next year's trip with more friends!

This has to be one of the most inspiring and beautiful holiday locations we have ever stayed in. We thoroughly enjoyed ourselves and relaxed so much due to the excellent facilities and beautifully presented and very homely accommodation. The owners, Jillian and Matthew couldn't be more helpful and friendly during our stay- when can we come back?!

We had a good holiday in a beautiful area and the pool is a particularly attractive feature of this property but there are a few issues that we feel need some attention. The shower screens in the bathrooms are just not long enough so that it is impossible to have a shower without soaking the bathroom floor every time, even with the water pressure turned down. The downstairs loo has a transparent Perspex end wall and sliding door with a lace curtain. This caused several moments of embarrassment even though we were all related! The washing machine is in the garage and is adequate but there are no drying facilities, apart from a folding rack which was not sufficient for 7 of us. We were welcome to use the owner’s line but it was often full of their own laundry. I know that not everyone does much laundry on holiday but as there was a full car and limited luggage space, we washed every day. Our own line or rotary dryer would have been helpful. There is, indeed, a large selection of books but it seemed that at least two thirds are Dutch, presumably inherited from the previous owners. There is a good selection of board games and the children appreciated the Wii. The gite is very spacious upstairs, although probably not ideal for very tall people, due to the sloping ceilings in the bedrooms. There is not a great deal of natural light in the bedrooms due to its conversion from a hayloft. The main issue for us is that we felt that the downstairs area is not really large enough to comfortably accommodate the number of people who can actually sleep in the property. This is particularly evident in the kitchen. As a large family who like cooking, we found the actual cooking/preparation area is extremely limited in size, particularly as you could be preparing food for up to 10. Having looked at the photographs again, I don’t think that this area is shown. It is fine for breakfast, snacks etc but it was quite hard work cooking main meals for 7 every evening. If you eat out a lot this wouldn’t be a problem but, for our family, I would specifically check this issue in future accommodation.

Hello and thank you for your comments. We welcome feedback from all of our customers so that we can continually make improvements where needed. I would like to address some of things that you found to be an issue for you. The shower screens are standard fitted shower screens and are probably in thousands of homes. Our customers are usually happy with them, in fact they are pleased with the fact that there is an outside shower and the two showers over the bath - offering a wide choice of bathing opportunities. The 'transparent' glass that you mention is actually 'privacy glass' and is both frosted and bubbled ( with the addition of an extra net curtain) - again standard issue, privacy glass - probably in thousands of bathrooms. Once again I can only re- iterate that our many customers have not found this to be an issue for them. However, in light of your comment - we have replaced the net curtain with a standard curtain. The sloping ceilings are indeed an intrinsic feature of this beautiful barn conversion. We wanted to retain as much of the authentic charm of the building as possible. Our previous clients have told us that these qualities are what gives the Gite its unique, homely character. There are 'skylights' fitted in 2 of the bedrooms -flooding the rooms with natural light. In the ground floor bedroom we have one wall with floor to ceiling patio doors leading directly on to the sunlit terrace. There is only one bedroom that does not have a sky light - but has a small window. This was deliberate, as this is the only bedroom which faces South and our customers usually appreciate the fact that it keeps the room cool , even when the temperature outside is over 40 degrees...There are 30 English books in our collection and 35 French books, the rest are Dutch. We cater for an international client base and usually 30 books are sufficient for a 14 day stay - However we do continuously add to our collection. You are right, it is unusual for someone to do a lot of washing every day whilst on holiday - However, in light of your comments about sharing our washing line - we have discreetly put up a new washing line at the back of the Gite ( we have to be careful when placing washing lines as our other clients have come to appreciate the beautiful views and not to look at other peoples washing) The kitchen is 'open-plan' and works well for the majority of our customers. ( we have had wedding caterers and party planners utilise the facilities for much larger parties than yours - with no problems and complimentary feedback) The space in the Gite ( all 170 meters squared) is usually sufficient for our customers and is usually well received ( the 3 sofas, 3 armchairs , 2 floor cushions and large dining room table) in addition with the outside private and very pretty, courtyard garden has seating for 12 and a barbQ and is normally well appreciated. We believe Al hambra offers excellent value for money for the number of people it accommodates. ( there are a limited amount of larger Gites in our area - especially at such a competitive rate) We are so sorry that you did not seem to appreciate it as much as our other guests. Its a shame, but sometimes large extended family groups have very specific and unique needs which( judging from our previous excellent reviews) we are usually more than able to accommodate. We believe our previous reviews speak for themselves. Thanks again.

We stayed at Al Hambra for the second time in September, having thoroughly enjoyed our stay last summer. The property is in an idyllic countryside location but it is only a short drive to a number of local towns and some great holiday activities such as horse riding, a water park and a small theme park. The house is lovely inside, with plenty of room for a big family, and has a courtyard where we sat outdoors to eat on the nights when we just wanted to relax. The pool is a fantastic addition to the property and we spent a few days relaxing around the pool making the most of the beautiful weather. Owners Jillian and Matthew are incredibly helpful and kindly made some recommendations for local places to visit and also went out of their way to make reservations for us at a couple of fantastic restaurants. Would recommend to families/couples/groups looking to relax in the beautiful French countryside and explore the local region. A truly fabulous two weeks and I can't wait to return in the future!

This is a four bedroomed house. The finish and feel of the house is higher spec than the pictures suggest. Upstairs there are three double bedrooms and a family bathroom. The only criticism would be that there is no genuine double bed - they are all singles pushed together, which meant my partner and I kept falling down the gap in the middle! The upstairs bedrooms are very pretty but have sloping ceilings so you can only stand up in part of the room. They are really pretty though, with all sorts of lovely, arty touches and beams which give them a nice feel. The fourth bedroom is a pretty, good sized single which is downstairs, next to a separate shower room and loo. The bedroom has doors straight out onto the courtyard. The downstairs is spacious with an open plan kitchen area, large dining area and lounge and is bigger than it seems from the pictures. You have a private courtyard with a pond where you can eat and enjoy the sun. The house is joined onto the owners' property on one side and another, smaller rental house on the other. The garden is huge and absolutely stunning with fruit treas and flowers and a beautiful view. The pool is gorgeous and a good size for the property. Matthew and Jillian are unintrusive but warm and friendly (we were welcomed with wine and home made bread and invited to help ourselves to veg and fruit from their garden) and we felt completely able to relax in the garden and pool. They offered us an opportunity to join in activities locally - we tried horseriding and archery - and were very helpful and informative about the local area. There are several very pretty towns and villages nearby as well as a health spa. The only other criticism would be that there was no washing machine working in the house (it had apparently broken shortly before our visit) so we had to ask our hosts to do washing for us, which was not ideal. It may be worth checking that this has been resolved if it was important to you. I have already recommended this rental to a friend - it is excellent value. Their smaller, two bedroomed property next door is also stunning. The area is easy to navigate and the drive from the airport (we drove from Bordeaux) was straightforward. We were a party of six, two seniors, my two kids and my partner and me. It worked really well for everyone.
