Set amidst splendid fanning palm trees and overlooking the lovely pool Rom Yen is a gem. We stayed in the apartment above the landlady Phyllis, who couldn't have been more helpful with our various medical and car problems: always there when we needed local knowledge without being obtrusive.
The rooms are large, clean and well proportioned; the balcony is huge; and the pool is a great place to hang out - with a sala Thai for shade if you need it. The two houses on the property are set back from the main road. Around the corner is a 7-Eleven (with an ATM), a decent pharmacy, Thai massage and a great Swedish bakery for your morning coffee and pastries.
It's a 10 minute walk to the beach and 15 mins to the shops and restaurants of Kamala town - cabs and tuk tuks are easily available if you can't be bothered to walk. The Fantasea market is cool and is only over the road: it's buzzing on the weekend with live Thai music and dancing if that's your thing.
