Pure heaven on earth
Herdsmans House is a wonderful place to stay if you are looking for peace and tranquillity. The location overlooking the sea and the mountains is perfect and the comfort and cleanliness are outstanding. Both Mary and Des were the best hosts you could wish for, and they made our stay one of the best holidays we have had for years! I would definitely recommend the house to all our friends and family. We are looking forward to booking the house again in the very near future.

Dear Bernard and Marion, We are very happy that your grandchildren and yourselves enjoyed your stay with us. It was great that you were able to get an opportunity to catch and taste some Atlantic mackerel! We are delighted the children enjoyed the tractor rides - great craic for them and us. You are welcome back anytime. Kind Regards, Mary and Des

Blissfully relaxing in a fantastic location!!
From the moment we arrived at Herdsman's House Des and Mary made us feel very welcome, down to the freshly baked bread and tin of biscuits for our kids. Herdsman's House is very spacious, clean and has all the amenities you could possibly need for your stay; the games room is an added bonus for the occasional rainy day. If there is anything that you may need Des and Mary said to let them know and they would do their best to source this. Although remote there are a number of high quality restaurants and bars within easy driving distance. Additionally, there are a number of small secluded beaches within easy walking distance. Des went his way to ensure that our two children felt included by giving them tractor driving lessons which both boys noted as the highlight of their holiday. We found Des and Mary to be extremely helpful and attentive by ensuring that we made the most of our holiday by pointing out local landmarks and places to visit and see. Overall an amazing holiday destination which we hope to repeat in the future.

This is a great holiday cottage, which I thoroughly recommend. It’s spacious, reasonably priced in a tranquil location with beautiful views. It’s close to good walking country and many fine surfing beaches. The owners Des and Mary are, as the other reviews say, very good hosts.

Great Family Getaway - Recommended
We have just returned from our week long holiday in Sligo and Herdsmans house was the perfect getaway for the whole family. The house is generous in space and easily housed and entertained four adults and four children. The children enjoyed the games room and space outside to kick a ball whilst adults relaxed in the sun room, large kitchen or by the roaring fire. Perhaps the nicest thing about our stay was the ongoing hospitality of Dessy who was so patient and kind to the young ones, even giving them tractor riding lessons and showing them the farm animals. The adults were treat to a lesson and tour of local surroundings and even left with a tangible piece of history from the small harbour. In a nutshell, this loved house offers a beautiful remote location with lovely sea views, plenty of space and very quickly feels like home. Recommended by the Harrison's and Grove's, both large and small ; )

Lovely house in a perfect location with stunning views.
We stayed at Herdsmans House for 1 week at Easter we had great weather sunshine everyday and sitting on the porch was the perfect start to the morning. The house has everything you could need and the games room is ideal to keep younger kids entertained. The sunroom was great when it got a bit cool outside and it had lovely views of the bay. Nothing was too much troucle for Desmond the owner and he would stop on the way past the house for a quick chat and a bit of crack. The area has some nice beaches and horse riding etc so plenty for all to do. The free wifi was a great bonus as well. We hope to be back soon and would recommend this house and area to all. Thanks again Ruth Grogan and family.

Too far and Too cold - not for cold weather rental
This house was large enough, nicely decorated, and very clean. The owner was friendly, almost too much as he appeared every day to check on us. Seemed rather intrusive. There were two issues with staying at the property. The first was it was just to far from everything. The road to the house was very curvey and was very dark at night, made driving very difficult and slow. So coming home at night was a problem. The bigger issue was how cold the house was. This might not be a problem in spring and summer, but visiting in November, it was just too cold. The place had electric heat which did not keep the house at a comfortable tempeture. I froze taking a shower. We left a day early for warmer accomodations.

Thank you for your review. Delighted that you found the house clean and well maintained. In winter time it gets dark early and in the countryside, there is no street lighting. Many guests appreciate the moon reflecting off the ocean in front of the house. Some guests really like being away from the town and others don't. We are sorry that you chose not to spend a few extra euro to heat the house in the middle of winter, especially as the cost of the house for each of the 7 people was 9 euro per night for your 3 night stay. We always reduce the cost of the house to account for the cost of heat in the off season. Since you had a family bereavement, we felt we should check with you to help you as much as we could. We didn't mind making reservations for dinner, horse riding, etc. as you asked. Sorry if you felt this was intrusive. We are so sorry that you had to cancel the rest of your holiday and hope you were back in time for the funeral.

Like Borrowing a Family Friend's Home.
This is a perfect base to explore what this part of Ireland has to offer; beaches, walks, views, good food, wild and wonderful weather! The house has everything you need - even crab crackers! Mary and Desmond couldn't have been more hospitable hosts. 2 families travelled together and the set up of house was perfect for sharing the 4 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms equally. All of us said we could have easily stayed and relaxed for another week.

About the neighbourhood
Bird Watching This area is a paradise for birds and waterfowl. Some of our land has been recently designated as special area of conservation. Barnacle Geese visit us every year from mid-October to late April. A walkway (for able and disabled) provides direct access to view the geese. Close by (10 minutes) is the Ballygilgan Nature Reserve (Lissadell) (http://ballygilgannaturereserve.com). And Bird Watch Ireland / Sligo site (http://birdwatchireland.ie or http://sligobirding.com) provide up to date recent sighting of various birds and waterfowl in the Sligo area. Arts and Culture Maugherow is notorious for its artists from writers, poets, painters, and fairy makers, and many have set up home here. The Model (Niland Gallery), Hamilton Gallery, Yeat’s Society, Hawkswell, Blue Raincoat Theatre, the Factory, and more are within 20 minutes drive. Surfing Go to Lislarry (about 6km) for some of the best waves in the northwest. Or go further to afield to Bundoran (http://www.turfnsurf.ie orhttp://bundoransurfschool.com) or Strandhill (http://www.strandhillsurfschool.com) and experience the thrills of surfing on the big Atlantic waves (both 30 minutes away). Or the Adventure Sligo site (http://www.adventuresligo.com) can provide additional links. Boating/Canoeing/Kayaking There are several ways to take to the sea. If you have your own boat (sail boat, rib, canoe, etc) bring it along and we will help you launch it from the recently renovated Raghley pier. You can explore and relax in tranquility of Drumcliffe Bay. The boat can be stored in our sheds. Another popular activity is kayaking or canoeing (http://www.adventuresligo.com/water/kayaking). Horseriding If you own your own horse(s), you can have a unique holiday by bringing him/her/them with you. Access to the local beaches (Ardtarmon Strand/The Golden Strand or Tra Bui) can be provided through the owner’s land. Then the horse(s) can graze under your watchful eye. All options considered. Contact us for more information. Alternatively, Island View offers horseriding for all the family year round (http://islandviewridingstables.com). This family run business is located about 15 minutes away and offers beach rides, trekking, lessons, and carriage riding. Use these links for additional riding stables: http://www.irelandonhorseback.com or http://www.markreestables.com) in the Sligo area. Golfing Ireland is renowned for its golf courses and Rosses’ Point is no exception. The County Sligo Golf Club at Rosses’ Point (http://countysligogolfclub.ie) is ranked in the top 10 links courses in Ireland. The club boasts renowned visitors and champions, Rory McElroy and Tom Watson. Or you can go to Berties Pitch and Putt (http://www.bertiespnp.co.nr) or the Tyeconnell Pitch and Putt course in Bundoran. Fishing There are plenty of excellent fishing points on the Raghley peninsula, where you can catch mackerel, pollock, bollin or if you are lucky sea trout. Raghley Harbour is located ¼ mile away. Spoil yourself with some fresh lobster and crab caught by local fishermen (available on request). Or try your hand at getting some razor fish or rock fishing. Crab fishing off the pier provides fun for everyone. In Rosses’ Point (http://www.sligoboatcharters.com) or Mullahmore (http://www.offshore.ie or http://www.inishmurrayislandtrips.com) charter boats are available for the serious fishermen. We can help with any bookings. Walking/Hill Walking Exploring North Sligo on foot can be a beautiful way to see the county. Various magical walks include: Lissadell House and Woods; Glencar Lake and Waterfall; Streedagh Point and Beach; Glennif Horseshoe at the foot of Ben Bulben to name a few. Go to http://www.sligotourism.ie and/or http://www.irishtrails.ie/Trail/Benbulben-loop or http://www.coillteoutdoors.ie for more information on mountain walks, nature trails, coastal walks and more. Local Attractions: The following sites provide useful information about places to see and visit in Sligo: 1. http://sligotourism.ie 2. http://www.irishtourist.com/directory/places_to_visit/west/sligo/ 3. http://www.lookwest.ie/events 4. http://mykidstime.ie 5. http://www.sligoheritage.com/links.htm 6. http://www.discoversligo.com/?pagid=arts 7. http://www.discoversligo.com/?pagid=heritage Shopping and Restaurants: Sligo offers shopping with a difference. There is a good mix of the extraordinary shops with hand-crafted pieces, the shops passed down through the generations and the more typical shops. Wooden sculpture by Michael Quirke and hand-crafted jewelry at The Cat and the Moon offer some unusual items while Mullaney’s and Moffits have been in the center of town for generations. The shopping centers provide a good mix on newer shops. Café’s, restaurants, and bistros are plentiful in Sligo town and North Sligo. Yeat’s Tavern (Davis’); Henry’s Restaurant and Lang’s Bar and Restaurant are within 10-15 minutes of ‘home’. About Us Page I (Desmond) am the second youngest child in my family of 5 sisters and 2 brothers. My father (Mick) was a dairy farmer and my mother (Maureen) was a nurse then ran a tourist business for many years. From the horse drawn caravans, in the field in front of our house, to bed and breakfast we shared our Irish traditions with many visitors. [Insert old pictures of cocks of hay and caravan on this page] The experience of meeting new people that came to stay with us was better than going on holidays – it was so exciting. What I loved most was when my mother asked me to greet the visitors at the front door, or bring them to the beach, or make some Irish coffees. I learned some French and German along the way too. In August 1985, my friendly nature led me to meet the love of my life, Mary. She was on a Yeat’s Literature and Landscape tour of Ireland and happened to be in Ellen’s pub for some traditional music. Mary hailed from Arlington, Mass (USA), a suburb of Boston and had just finished her Master’s Degree in Nursing. After a little persuading, I finally convinced Mary that the west of Ireland was the place to be! It is rather ironic that Mary’s mother emigrated from Kinsale, Co. Cork to Boston in the early 1950’s. We have 2 children, Elena, 11 years, and Tola, 9 years. Elena loves art, picking (and eating) blackberries, looking for mermaid’s purses on the beach, and crab fishing off the pier at Raghley Harbour. Tola loves fishing and boating, climbing to the top of the fairy fort, and football. And they both love playing guitar.
