Cottage
Stunning views, perched above the village of Gilsland, Northumberland, with private location on our 500 acre farm. The cottage sleeps 8 very comfortably, 3 double bedrooms ensuite, 1 twin room, family bathroom and downstairs wetroom. The cottage dates back to 1600's, was a fortified dwelling, built in typical Bastle House style and has been painstakingly restored. Many original features, knarled oak beams, arrow slit windows, sark boarded ceilings & hayloft steps. Ideal for large families or groups wanting a central base for exploring Hadrian's Wall & peaceful Northumberland, with Roman sites just minutes away. Quiet peaceful location to help you relax & unwind. Perfect base for walking & cycling, with paths straight from the door.

The cottage looked great on the Internet...but even better when we got there! It was lovely and clean, yet warm and cosy. The place was spacious- a great advantage as there were four adults and two boys staying there. Plenty of room for everyone to have their own space and also spend time together in the large living room. The beds were comfortable and the bedding clean. We even arrived to milk in the fridge so that we could all have a cuppa after our journey. Much appreciated. The views from the cottage were spectacular and it was lovely to sit out in the garden with a cuppa and scone after a long day walking Hadrian’s Wall. Perfect! Definitely one of the best cottages we have ever stayed in...and we holiday in cottages two or three times a year. Would certainly recommend this lovely place to friends and family...and will be back! Thanks for a great stay.

Stayed as a party of 4 adults & 3 children for 4 nights. Had a great time exploring the area with visits to Hexham, Washington WWT, Haltwhistle & Hadrian's wall. The accommodation was perfect with plenty of space & great facilities. The views are spectacular & the children loved having the freedom to play outside and see the lambs and sheep. The Owners Chris & Paul were very helpful, especially with directions! Highly recommend & am looking forward to our next visit.

The location was an ideal base to visit places along Hadrian's Wall. We were able to get away from it all and relax.

Booked the cottage for a week while we were in the UK visiting family and friends. The cottage is huge! We had planned on using it as a base to explore some of the border towns but in the end we ended up spending most of our time relaxing in and around the cottage. There are some long walks near by, Carlisle and Newcastle aren't too far away. The cottage was far better stocked then others we have stayed in, the kitchen has everything you need to cook with plus there's a little cupboard of left over things from previous visitors. The seclusion was the main thing we were after, after 3 weeks of hectic traveling we were looking for somewhere away from things and this place definitely delivered (except for the fighter jet that flew over but I thought that was cool!). Thanks for having us, Jamie and Gen

We had a wonderful early family Christmas at Nichols cottage. Paul & Chris's directions worked well, The cottage has amazing views. The house itself was great with plenty of space in the bedrooms a good sized well furnished living room and a perfect diner kitchen. Very atmospheric and in fitting with the countryside environment.

We booked to stay in the cottage in the first weekend of the half term to celebrate my mum's 50th (7 adults). The cottage was spacious and absolutely immaculate, with stunning views from the garden. No one felt they'd drawn the short straw with the bedrooms, all huge and three of them have en suites. Plenty of lovely walks near by- would also recommend the food at the local pub, The Samson. My mum hasn't stopped raving about it since we got back- fantastic weekend!

My family, 7 adults and one child, booked this breathtaking cottage to celebrate a 50th birthday. From arriving we were welcomed and lead to the secluded cottage. The cottage it's self is beautiful and has indescribable views. Paul and Chris were lovely, helping the family when needed and extremly welcoming. We loved it so much we will be booking up again next year. Can't wait to be back!

This is what the Web can do for travel. It was not an inn or B&B. More like a beautifully rennovated sheep farm stone house sitting high up looking down on the valley floor. There is nothing there but sheep. My GPS couldn't even find it. Call Shepard Paul for directions and bring the groceries with you. It's a schlep onto the village. The experince and The Wall are worth the effort

About the neighbourhood
The cottage is perched at the highest point on our 500 acre hill farm with stunning views across to the Lakeland Fells & Hadrian's Wall. There are walks straight from the door, and we are more than happy for our guests to explore the farm, and share our place. There are Roman sites in the village, which is 1.4 miles. In the village we have a delightful Pub with Bistro food, and a café with great coffee, snacks & cakes, and also where you can pick up supplies.
Getting around
The best way to see the sights would be exploring by car, this really gives you the freedom to explore the many Roman sites along Hadrian's Wall. The nearest train station would be Haltwhistle which is approx. 5miles, this can take you into Carlisle or Newcastle. We also have a Roman Wall bus AD122 which tours between Greenhead & Hexham, stopping at all the important Roman sites.
