About the neighbourhood
The unique island of Mersea lies off the coast of north east Essex, 9 miles from the historic Roman town of Colchester with its ancient castle. Mersea is a haven for food, yachting and bird enthusiasts. Mersea has a variety of restaurants, including the well-renowned Oyster Bar and the Company Shed. It is an ideal place to while away many hours doing nothing but have a coffee and watch the world go by; or you could browse the local independent shops, galleries and museum. For more active people there are numerous walks, water activities or bikes for hire; Mersea is a perfect retreat to get away from it all.
Getting around
It is quite easy to get around West Mersea as everything is within walking distance. The beach is about 5 minutes walk from the house and the village shops are a 10 and 20 minute walk depending where you wish to shop. There is also a regular bus service from Colchester which passes the end of Fairhaven Avenue and goes into and out of the village. The Anchorage is a very pleasant 45 minute walk along the beach but can be reached more quickly by road, about 5 - 7 minutes in the car.
