About the neighbourhood
Puerto Escondido is a town of perhaps 50,000 but with the feel of a smaller town. A small fishing village until the 1970s, when its worldclass surfing became an international attraction, Puerto Escondido remains a relaxed place with a very Mexican character. There are no resorts, high rise hotels or golf courses, but there are plenty of reasonably-priced restaurants and a variety of beautiful beaches. In addition to international surfers, tourists are primarily Mexican and Canadian. The weather is very warm year-round, with rainier weather June-August, and drier weather January-March. Casa Loma is located 5-10 minutes' walk from Playa Manzanillo. The area is safe but lively, with a school and a small hotel on the same street.
