The house is located in a small village in the Ariege valley, 1435m above sea level in the Pyrenees mountains close to Andorra. Adjacent to, but by-passed by, the N20 road which runs south from Toulouse via Foix and the spa town of Ax les Thermes to Bourg Madame/Puigcerda on the Spanish border. Self-catering, it sleeps up to eight adults plus two children. Although the village looks towards the charming old town of Ax for shopping etc, the nearest town is in fact Pas de la Case/a in Andorra. This ski resort offers tax free shopping for alcohol, tobacco, perfume and electrical goods and for those so inclined, several sports bars showing sporting events on satellite TV. Dating from revolutionary times before Napoleon took power this old, stone-built house with its huge, glass-fronted log fire is a 2.5 hour drive from Barcelona and Girona airports (low cost flights and car hire readily available) and 2 hours from Toulouse. It is also accessible by rail on the Toulouse/Barcelona line, with trains stopping regularly at the village station. This is rugged Cathar country, convenient for the many natural healing, thermal waters in the area. One kilometre south of the village is a five km tunnel through to the plain of the Cerdagne and beyond either to the Spanish Parc Natural de Cadi-Moixero or the French Mediterranean coast towards Canet-Plage and Collioure. The village itself is well provided with a mayor's office offering free wi-fi, post office, cash machine, café which also sells everyday essentials, hotel with bar and restaurant and a gite also with restaurant bookable by non-residents, bakery with cafe, repair garage, together with a railway station. There are many social events revolving around food and drink throughout the year. Organised nature walks are available via the gite d'etape or the municipal camping office and it may well be possible to see isards, eagles, marmots or even the elusive moufflon. The village is on the Trans-Pyreneean hiking route through the beautiful lakes in the mountains surrounding the village. An extensive range of outdoor activities is available in the area including mountain biking, fishing, kayaking, climbing and canyoning. In winter skiing is available at Porté-Puymorens (beginners), the Grand Valira (Andorra - experienced) or Ax-Bonascre (intermediate). The property is entered via a lobby area which gives access to a large basement with double sink, h/c water and laundry facilities. Logs (available to renters) are stored in an offshoot, but electricity is charged locally by units consumed. From the lobby stairs lead to the first floor living area comprising fully equipped kitchen; dining area with extendable table seating 10; a large shower-room with toilet, bidet and basin; lounge with sofa-bed and patio-doors to enclosed outside terrace with barbeque facilities. Stairs lead from the living room to the second floor sleeping accommodation consisting of two double bedrooms (one with king-size adjustable bed plus single bed and travel cot) and a twin bedded room plus a single bed on the large landing area and a bathroom with bath, toilet & basin.More
