Not far from the Via Appia, and countless other historic sites, and with feasible day trips by train to Rome and Naples, this is a great location for sightseeing. The 40 kilometres of beaches in the are make it a great location for summer holidays too. The house includes a charmingly painted living room/dining room, a fully-equipped kitchen, and two romantic bedrooms, each with modern baths. Its shady garden is deliciously scented by Jasmine and the blossoms of ancient orange and lemon trees. Enjoy cooking Italian style in the garden's own pizza oven and outdoor grill, then settle in and enjoy your meal at the stone outdoor table. Best of all, enjoy sunning and bathing in a your own pool. In May and June the jasmine blossom is positively overwhelming. The train station of Latina is only ten minutes by car from Sermoneta, and with the train journey to Rome only half an hour, daily sight-seeing visits to Rome are an attractive proposition. However, there is a wealth of tourist possibilities in the environs of Sermoneta; some of them are noted below. The ABBEY of VALVISCIOLO, a few kilometers north of SERMONETA, was established by Basilian monks in the VIIIth century and passed to the Knights Templar who reconstructed it in Gothic style using local stone. The Knights immortalized their ownership by sculpting their cross on the facade. In the XIIIth century, the Cistercians imposed their own style on the interior and in the decoration. Inside, frescoes by Nicola Circignani (*********) and Emilio Savonanzi (*********) can still be seen. Next to the church is the monastery with its cloisters. Not far from SERMONETA (6km) are the ruins of the ancient town of NINFA, the "Pompei of the Middle Ages", destroyed in 1381. The destruction of NINFA was the result of a feud between two branches of the Caetani family, the winners of which exacted this violent revenge. The town had contained within its walls ten churches, four monasteries, a municipal Palace, and a castle with a high tower. The ruins remained untouched for centuries; the crystal waters from the Lepino hills flowing through the lake and streams of the abandoned site. Today, all that remains of old NINFA are the ruins of the castle, the mills, and the churches, reflected in the waters of its lake. In 1920 Gelasio Caetani converted the site into a natural Oasis, a wonderful park of exotic and rare plants that thrive in this world-renowned micro-climate. These extraordinary gardens can be visited on the first Saturday and Sunday of each month from April to October, and on public holidays. An extraordinary natural site is the NATIONAL PARK OF CIRCEO, host to the Monte Circeo, 20 km of superb sandy beaches, four lakes and a forest in its 8,500 hectares (18,700 acres). Recognised by UNESCO as a "World Heritage Site", the park contains 1,237 species of fauna and 250 species of bird, and wild boar, deer and foxes thrive in the forest. It also contains ruins of Emperor Domitian's Villa and Lucullo's Spring. The 1,700 foot Monte Circeo is believed to be the site of Circe and her Sirens, described in Homer's Iliad. Circe drugged Ulysses' 23 companions and turned them into swine; however, Ulysses avoided this fate with an antidote provided by Hermes, and persuaded Circe to fall in love with him, which helps explain her decision to return his companions. The Roman Emperors had an eye for beauty, and in addition to Emperor Domitian's Villa near Sabaudia, those of Nero at Anzio and Tiberius at Sperlonga are testament to the fact that vacations in this area have an excellent, and lengthy, pedigree! Suggestivo
Veramente suggestivo, peccato non si è potuto visitare il castello per gli orari troppo limitati 10/12.Comunque per il resto veramente unico.

The Sermoneta Historic House was more than we hoped for.
We had only two weeks in Italy and we did not want to overextend ourselves. We wanted to see Rome, go to the beach, and stay in a hilltop village, all three of the quintessential tourist experiences in Italy. We found we were able to experience all three without going further south than an hour or two from Rome. The enchanting hilltop village of Sermoneta was quiet, friendly, and very beautiful. From there it was easy (with a rental car) to get to the beach and to Rome. The house was an oasis, and we were so taken with it from the moment we walked into its cool stone interior. The garden is a fragrant enchanted hideaway, and the pool is deep and clear and cool. My husband found the kitchen to be fully equipped, and my teenagers, who were reluctant to join us on the trip, did not want to leave at the end. I will alway have the most remarkable memories from this experience in Sermoneta; I feel very blessed to have found the Sermoneta house on-line last April.

Dear Lynne, We are so happy to read your thoughtful review, and know that you holiday with your family was the source of wonderful future memories. After all, that is what its all about. I should add to all the good things that you said, for those who don't want to drive, there are hourly ( or more) trains to Rome that take only 35 minutes. Very easy.

Consider yourself fortunate if you get to stay here
What more can you ask for? A fabulous retreat in a delightful, medieval hilltop town well located close to both Rome and Naples. The beautiful house is perched on top of the hillside with magnificent views stretching to the sea. It has all the amenities for a comfortable stay and the little town has a number of excellent restaurants as well little delis and shops for your daily needs. The area is rich with history and one of my favorite outings was to Tiberius's grotto. There is lots to do and see. The hosts Richard and Carol are real gems and are committed t ensuring that you have memorable stay.

We are so glad that you enjoyed your stay. Indeed, Sermoneta is one of Italy's most beautiful, best-kept secrets. I am glad that you had a chance to meet Richard and Carol, the owners, who aren't always there. However, we at Commendable Rentals, and I, who lived there, make sure that guests, have 18 pages of suggestions of things to see and do, and are always keen to offer suggestions and advise to our guests there. I am glad that you got to see Tiberius's Grotto. It's one of my favorite outings, too. Susan, Commendable Rentals

Feel like a local in this amazing hillside town. And the pool! Che bella piscina!
Visiting Sermoneta is an ideal Italian experience. It's small, not touristy, and exceptionally beautiful. And staying at this house was magical. When we walked in and saw the stone walls and floors we couldn't stop saying "Wow!" And then when we entered the courtyard with its dining table, lemon tree, and incredible pool, we knew this was the place for us. The bed was very comfortable, and we slept and rested really well in the quiet and peace of Sermoneta. But the highlight for us was experiencing this friendly, gorgeous medieval town and returning home to hang out in the pool and courtyard. We channeled our inner Marcella Hazan and cooked so many great meals in the kitchen. And then we ate them in the courtyard under the lemon tree or next to the pool. Very romantic and relaxing. Sermoneta is fantastic to explore, but it's also a great location to visit the seaside town Sperlonga (gorgeous) and the Gardens of Ninfa (unforgettable, especially the little river). In nearby Latina, we stopped at a great Carrefour Market grocery store (the one at Via del Lido, 23, 04100 Latina) that we wish we could return to weekly. And in the local markets of Sermoneta the dolcelatte, mozzarella di bufala, bread, and produce were a dream. We loved our stay at this property, and we plan to return. (Oh! And a note about navigation: use the owners' clear and helpful directions rather than Google Maps!)

Dear David, Thank you so much for writing about your stay, I particularly loved that you referred to Marcella Hazan, who was one of my first introductions so many years ago to Italian cooking, before I moved to Italy. But , I am delighted that you also took time to explore some of the many wonders of the area. The Gardens of Ninfa, as a World Heritage site should be on everyone's "bucket list". Thanks again for your eloquent note, and come back soon!

Comfortable lodgings in updated stone house in hilltop medieval town in striking distance of Rome and magnificent beach.
I highly recommend this sel-contained apartment in a renovated stone house dating from the 12th century in a historic hilltop town. Sermoneta is free of traffic, with magnificent views over the countryside and out to the Tyrrhenian seas. The town with its medieval castle has an excellent choice of reasonably priced restaurants and pizzeria but tranquil with only the sounds of conversation between neighbours as you stroll the streets of stone. The location is perfect for daytrip excursions to Rome or nearby beaches or quiet repose. The accomodations are elegantly furnished with charming bedrooms and a kitchenette with espresso machine and other amenities. The view from the balcony is splendid and at night, there is a view of the sunset over the plain as the lights of the houses on the plain are turned on. During the daytime there is a small wading pool in which to cool off while enjoying the view or reading with a glass of wine at hand. Superb accomodation in a memorable setting.

I am so delighted that you enjoyed your stay. I hope that you don't mind if I make a few comments. Perhaps you did not use the kitchen, because of all the great restaurants, but is is certainly a real kitchen and not a kitchennette. It has a dishwasher, a microwave, a large oven, a 4 burner gas stove-top, a clothes washer, and automatic Nespresso espresso machine, lots f dishes, glasses, pots and pans. It is big enough for several people to be cooking together. The pool is far from a wading pool as it is up to 2 meters deep, and 5 meters by 5 meters. But as you were there recently, maybe you just looked at it. I hope that you can come back and enjoy a full immersion swim! Thanks again for writing. All the Best

Bliss
We had a fantastic time staying at the house in Sermoneta, literally could not fault it. With everything you need a stone's throw away - great local wine, food, markets and sights, you could happily stay in the medieval hill town for your entire stay aided by the thoroughly detailed guide left by the owners - super helpful. We decided to venture further afield to visit the nearby beaches (less than an hour away) and had a fully rounded trip. We are already thinking about returning next year!!!!

We are so glad that you enjoyed your stay in beautiful Sermoneta, actually voted one of the most beautiful Medieval towns in all of Italy. We do hope that you will return. While planning your trip, do ask us about xschedules for some of the many festivals organized in Sermoneta all year around. For example, there is an Arts festival the entire month of May and a music festival the entire month of July, but also smaller events 12 months of the year!

A Perfect Holiday Retreat--Close to Rome with Hill-town Views
Sermoneta offers a fully-accommodating family space to recreate and relax. We spent 10 days here in late June, which included a couple of memorable beach excursions along the historic coastline, hikes to the impressive Castle and around the charming town, several inexpensive and delicious meals of the freshest ingredients, and a few day-trips to Rome via 30-minute train. At home, daily swims in the pool and trips for fresh bread, mozzarella and pizza just steps away from local shopkeepers offer an easy start to the day. The kitchen is fully equipped and there is a stone table for outdoor dining. We enjoyed sunset views of the Mediterranean sea and lovely local wines. We celebrated our daughter's graduation here and hope to return. Others in the guestbook note that spring and fall can be beautiful as well.

We are delighted that you enjoyed your time in Sermoneta. It is indeed a special place, as there are few 800 year old towns that are both so well maintained, offer the sense of such an historic past, while having a vibrant community, with a fine life-style and a many cultural events. Sermoneta also has a micro-climate with mild year around weather which offers great a spring or fall holiday as well as delightful summers. We hope to see you back soon.

Splendid home in a glorious and unique Village!
The web site proposed a lovely location and property; the reality well met all of those advance expectations. The owners were most helpful for establishing the arrival processes and the local staff prepared the house very well for our arrival. The property was totally unique; medieval is correct; full of charm and character. The house was furnished exceptionally and we could not fault anything that was made available to us. The beds were super comfortable; the living room quiet and relaxing; the bathrooms were great and the kitchen totally well equipped. Outside, the shaded patio area, complete with the hammock, was really nice to use morning, noon and night and the pool area was the icing on the cake with it's splendid views over the Pontine Plains out to the sea. The Internet worked a treat too! Five star and elegant in every aspect! The village was beautiful; characterful and traditional. We were thrilled at the diverse choice of cafes and restaurants, as well as the peace and quiet of largely a carless society with splendid views from every direction. All of these were within a very easy walk from "Domus Doull". We loved returning from Rome's hustle and bustle to the peace and quiet of the village! Highly recommendable to anyone who wants to enjoy a comfortable "away from it all" stay in a truly unique property and location!
