A lovely self-catering, pet friendly, English holiday cottage, in the heart of the historic Chilham village, near the Cathedral City of Canterbury, Kent. The medieval village of Chilham has a long history, traces of which date back to the Neolithic period. The focal points of the village are undoubtedly the castle (it's wonderful gardens attributed to Capability Brown are open on special occasions) and the Church (with views over the surrounding valleys). The heart of the village is Chilham Square, which has been the set for a number of films including an episode of the 2005 ITV series Agatha Christie - Marple “The Moving Finger” and the 2009 BBC series “Emma”, in which The Smithy was turned into a shop, Amongst the Tudor buildings surrounding the Square sits The Smithy a charming grade...A lovely self-catering, pet friendly, English holiday cottage, in the heart of the historic Chilham village, near the Cathedral City of Canterbury, Kent. Booked with Australia-based owner and paid in advance, then advised of local 'manager' we had to contact to obtain keys. Proved uncontactable right up to day we arrived to take up rental, only to discover she was away on holiday! Other telephone numbers of owner's brother in London also uncontactable. We were more than disappointed - rather extremely angry that what was intended as a much-needed break following a period of considerable family stress turned into a nightmare. I shudder to think what our position would have been were we a foreign family arriving in that situation without the recourse of returning home and with nowhere else to stay (the local Woolpack Inn was fully booked for the Saturday night). Once it became clear that we could not obtain access and that in any case the property had almost certainly not been serviced following the previous rental, we had no alternative but to return home before it became dark. In addition to which we had over £100 worth of food in a freezer bag that was rapidly going off in the heat. I need hardly add that we remain furious at the grossly unprofessional way this rental has been handled. The village is indeed lovely but we would only consider visiting again if one of the several other rental cottages was available.

Dear Mr Knight, I have apologised and refunded plus extra. As I explained the person who looks after the cottage have made the mistake. I am also not able to contact her and was not aware of her going on holiday. Booking was properly recorded via email, booking calendar and agencies calendar. Everything was done correctly from my front. Unfortunately I am not able to respond on behalf of the person who is in charge of keys. We will be dealing with this appropriately. Really sorry for what has happened. In the many years of letting The Smithy this is the first time but we will ensure also the last. Very sorry for the ruined holiday.

Thank you. Yes agree without the cars the square is just a picture perfect of what life would have looked like. Soon after we have had a combi boiler fitted and no problems ever since, works wonders!

Overall the cottage is very nice, a typical wood beamed cottage. Very nice inside and has almost all the amenities you need. Fantastic location, beautiful square with very picturesque houses. Very short walk to the pub, very welcoming neighbours too. We enjoyed our stay there very much as there were plenty of things to do and they were not too far to drive to them. However, yes there is a but! For the price paid for a weeks break we expected something a little more special. Cleanliness of the cottage wasn't very good, maybe the cobwebs add to the atmosphere?? The whole cottage needed a good going over. No, toilet clearer, even just to freshen it up, and no i wasn't buying any! Also, maybe I'm fussy, but i think it could have done with a 5ft bed at least. there was plenty of room in the bedroom, just needed some stuff clearing out. FreeSat was temperamental to say the least...if it rained you had no signal. Im glad it had internet TV. NO WIFI!! & don't expect a phone signal either!! Kent seems to have the worst phone signal in the country!! Something eating in the walls?? From the first night i heard something nibbling inside the wall near the bed, thought it was dripping water, but i think something was eating away at the woodwork? Im a lite sleeper so it kept me awake a few nights. Overall it was a nice cottage as i said, and i would recommend.

Although with some delay I am responding to this review. I appreciate the comment of the bed and although it would be nice to get a bigger bed the room is just not long enough. Not sure about the clutter? The furniture is kept to the essential requirement for a holiday let: bed side tables, wardrobe and one chest of drawers. So not sure how to respond to this. With saying that I have now a new solid timber bed although still just a double bed, which is what is advertised. In regards to noise, having sent a pest expert nothing has been noted. Unfortunately the joy of being an old terraced cottage with more or less the roofs being in some way connected and the little ‘monsters’ move between roofs and gutters. We do get pest experts in on a regular basis for peace of mind and happy that everything is under control. No damages. Sorry for the delay in responding to your comment.

The cottage was lovely with 2 Pubs nearby. There was a Dog friendly churchyard with poo bin a few steps away and a Post Office that opened every day with milk, papers etc. Chilham is ideal for exploring Kent, Canterbury has lovely restaurants - if you like Italian you must go to Pinocchios. We visited Whitstable along to Margate, Rye and Hastings, Faversham is lovely. Also lots of walks nearby and lovely views. Our Dog liked it so much he didn't want to leave

Our stay at The Smithy started with a warm welcome and ended with us not ever wanting to leave! The perfect English village stay, The Smithy is comfortably furnished and spotlessly clean. Centrally located in Chilham square, the easy pace of village life is all around you, not to mention the wonderful White Horse Hotel opposite and friendly neighbours. It is a great location to explore all that Kent has to offer. Canturbury, Sissinghurst and the seaside at Whitstable are easily reached from Chilham.

When we go on holiday we expect a little home from home and this wasn't it. Yes it's a great location but it seemed to lack comfort. The bed is only a double (I think most people's beds are now king size) not saying that the mattress was uncomfortable just small. The sofa is also not the most comfortable as it doubles as a sofa bed, there is also a wicker type 2 seater that would be better in a conservatory than a Tudor cottage. The weather was not very seasonal and rather cold when we asked for the heating to go on we were told that it would be at a cost of £5 a day. Which I thought was a bit much as we were paying a premium for high season
