Newbiggin-by-the-Sea is a small seaside town with a strong history of fishing. It is located at the southern edge of the beautiful & dramatic Northumberland coastline. The town has an amazing seafront with a sandy beach & promenade. There several cafes & eateries, fish & chip shops, small supermarkets, convenience stores & specialist traditional shops, including a butcher, fish monger & bakery. There is a delicatessen nearby & several traditional pubs. There is a children’s playground, golf course & bowling green. There are Catholic, Church of England, Methodist & United Reform churches in the town. A regular bus service provides good links to Newcastle upon Tyne & other nearby towns. The Maritime Centre, located near the Lifeboat Station at the end of the promenade, includes a small museum. The Woodhorn Museum, just outside the town, incorporates the County Archives & gives visitors an insight into the history of the area with its rich mining & agricultural past.
Newbiggin-by-the-Sea is a gateway to Northumberland. Hadrian’s Wall is easily accessible by car. Kielder Forest & reservoir is about an hour’s drive. The town is on the England Coastal Path which is being developed nationally, for completion by 2020. Work on the local sections has bene completed. The market towns of Morpeth & Alnwick, Berwick & Hexham area also only an easy drive away. The railway station at Morpeth connects regularly to Newcastle & Berwick. Mainline services to London (3.5 hours) & Edinburgh (just over an hour) are also available on a more limited basis. The Alnwick Garden & Castle, Bamburgh & Lindisfarne are just some of the many attractions that are easily accessible by car. The relatively new addition of Northumberlandia, a landscaped sculpture (the naked lady) is also worth the short drive on a clear day to experience the amazing views of Northumberland & Tyneside. To the south are the seaside towns of Blyth, Whitley Bay & Tynemouth with their wonderful beaches.

Newbiggin-by-the-Sea is still a working fishing town. It’s amazing seafront, promenade & beach are just a few metres away. ‘The Couple’, a statue looking out to sea, is becoming a well-known landmark. Just wander into the town & you will find an array of shops, cafes & pubs. You will find traditional shops, including a butcher, wet fish shop, bakeries, a fruit & vegetable shop, a hat shop (yes, a hat shop), florists.restaurants, bookmakers & an array of other shops & take-aways.
There are 2 fish & chip shops & the nearest, Corner Plaice, on the main road just opposite the corner at the end of the street, provides take-away Sunday Lunches. You need to pre-book & leave a plate!
