About the neighbourhood
Maiden Newton is a village with about 1,200 inhabitants, 7 miles north west of Dorchester. It has more facilities than most villages including a post office/corner shop, newsagent/coffee shop, hardware store, fish & chip shop, petrol station/Spar, pub and restaurant (www.le-petit-canard.co.uk). It also has a small railway station with trains to Dorchester (11 mins) and Weymouth (25 mins). The village is on Route 26 of the National Cycle Network.
The pretty nearby village of Cattistock with the Fox & Hounds pub (excellent food) is about a mile away. Cerne Abbas (prettiest town in England 2008) with its famous phallic white chalk giant is a short drive away. Evershot which is mentioned in Hardy's books is also close.
