Farmhouse
This is the perfect 'get away from it all' holiday location in the northern most region of the Hautes-Pyrénées. A beautifully restored farmhouse with a converted chai (wine store), with high vaulted ceilings and exposed beams. There is a beautiful open plan kitchen which looks out onto the dining area by the large inglenook fireplace. A sweeping south facing lawn with mature, enclosed 3/4 acre garden leads you down to the private 12m x 5m pool with roman steps and stunning views, all nestling tranquilly amongst vineyards and sunflowers. The pool is easily visible from the house and terraces and is 1.1 m at the shallow end and 1.5 m at the deep end. We spent 2 fabulous weeks at this farmhouse. The facilities and pool were excellent, clean and it was kitted out with everything we could need. The views of the Pyrenees from the farmhouse were stunning. Great location, very peaceful and with local amenities not too far a drive away. Would definitely go back!

This was our first stay at Maison Acanthe, and we are hoping it won't be our last! From the moment you arrive, there is a welcoming sense of calm and tranquility. The garden greats you with simply stunning views down the gently sloping garden to the beautiful pool, and then sweeps out over fields to the Pyrenees, it continues to give with the presence of so much nature, our young children (3 and 5) were completely enchanted by the birds, the little lizards and the butterflies! Inside the house, each room is really well appointed and equipped - we wanted for nothing, and awaiting us on arrival was a wonderful welcome basket, a really thoughtful touch from the owners, the house was also immaculately clean! We made a day trip to Pont D'Espange for a truly amazing walk in the mountains, ultimately ending at the breathtaking Lac De Gaube. On another occasion we visited the very child friendly Plage d'Hendaye where we spent a day paddling in the warm waters and soaking up the sun, our children made some very special memories. Maison Acanthe really is a jewel in the foothills, and we would very much like to return next year, we have been enchanted!

This year we returned for our fourth stay in this wonderful property, and it felt like coming home. Like in the holidays before, we enjoyed the beautifully restored farmhouse, the lovely spacious garden, the inviting pool, and the fantastic view into the surrounding countryside and even the Pyrenees. The house is very well equipped and kept very clean. The owners are very accommodating, easily approachable, and caring for their guests. Thanks also for the valuable hiking recommendations, we enjoyed the trip to the Pyrenees very much. We will certainly return to beautiful Maison Acanthe again!

We came from one lockdown to, due to a broken down car, another. If you want to stay 2 weeks without going out, this is the place. Tracey and Mark’s home is everything you could want with the right amount of space not to go mad with 4 children. I am sure someone said there were sugar tongs, but I couldn’t find them!

We spent two amazing weeks with two families in Maison Acanthe! It’s a great place for a relaxing holiday: the house is perfectly equipped-you won’t miss anything! It is beautifully decorated , in the kitchen you find everything to prepare a meal, there are lots of books to read ...The cosy bedrooms have all ventilation for warm summer nights. In the beautiful, well maintained garden you find shade given by different trees at any time in the summer heat or you can cool down in the big pool. The surrounding is absolutely calm and wonderful for cycling without much traffic and in the night you have the sky full of stars! Madiran is a nice little village with a fabulous bakery ( the best “pain au raisin” ever). The vineyards in this area produce fantastic vines - you can try them in the nice little shop (Chez Madiran) on the main road. You find some really good restaurants in the surroundings, but it is also a pleasure to cook by yourself and stay with a glass of vine on the lovely roofed terrace with the amazing view to the Pyrénées! The owners of the house are very helpful for any questions and react professional if a problem occurs. You can’t find better hosts! Thank you again, Tracey and Mark, for sharing this place with us! We will definitely return!

Maison Acanthe is a superb holiday home with all mod cons, beautiful views of the Pyrenees, lovely pool and very quiet. Located in the countryside but not far from all the usual amenities and a great central based to explore the region. Day trips to the Pyrenees, Lourdes, Pau and the Atlantic Coast all possible. Local towns all worth a visit especially Marciac. Great local markets. Nice selection of restaurants nearby and supermarkets within 15/20 minutes drive British TV channels available

Our second stay in this beautiful, well appointed restored farmhouse was even better than last year. The house was immaculate again, the extensive garden and the nice pool well maintained. The lovely owners are easily approachable and very supportive. The view of the mountains was as gorgeous as before, which together with the absolutely quite location ensures for a very relaxing time. The central location of the house makes it easy to explore the lovely gacogny region and the foothills of the Pyrenees, with its fortified towns and castle villages, as well as many nature trails. We also enjoyed the culinary specialities and multiple flavors of this wine growing region. We will certainly return next year!

Our second visit to Maison d'Acanthe did not disappoint. We were well and truly blessed with fabulous weather and couldn't believe how quickly our 10 day sejour passed. We found the perfect formula: swim, eat, cycle, eat, drink, sleep.... and repeat! Many thanks to Mark and Tracey for giving us the opportunity to enjoy their beautiful home once more. Ps many thanks also to Sue the housekeeper who made us feel most welcome.

The house is beautifully decorated yet functional and not cluttered, and most importantly EVERYTHING works (showers, washing machine, pool cover, knives etc!). The size was perfect for 9 of us. The furniture was comfortable (especially the beds). The WiFi reliable in most rooms. Madiran is a very pretty village with a good and friendly bakery and the region around it is underrated and therefore not crowded: the perfect location to visit both the Gers and the Pyrennees.

We had a wonderful two weeks here in August and couldn't fault it. The pictures don't do it justice, we didn't want to come home. The house was clean and tidy, and there was plenty of room for nine of us. The kitchen is very well equipped with a large fridge freezer which came in handy with a large party. The large garden has plenty of room for children to play whilst the pool was easily large enough to accommodate all of us. The views are incredible and it is extremely quiet. In the end we only left the house for one day out as we had everything we needed for an enjoyable relaxing holiday at the house. Tracey, the owner answered all our questions and queries promptly, and could not have been more helpful. We would definitely return.

About the neighbourhood
The area is perfect for cycling for adults and children alike - plenty of challenging hills or mountains if you want them or safe country lanes with not so many hills for the children. There is also canoeing, horseriding and golf not too far away, local restaurants and the seaside and mountains all within 2 hours drive. There are plenty of small market towns in the area, as well as the larger towns of Tarbes, Pau and the beautiful cathedral city of Auch. There are many local events and an abundance of local vineyards for as much wine tasting as you can manage.
