Swallow Barn is close to the picturesque market towns of Kendal and Kirkby Lonsdale. Windermere, at the heart of the southern lakes, is within 30 minutes by car. There are walks around the area and many places of interest such as Arnside with its tidal estuary and organised low-tide walks across Morecambe Bay sands. Leighton Moss Nature Reserve and Ingleton with its caves and waterfalls are both nearby, as are the famous 'Three Peaks' of Ingleborough, Pen y Ghent and Whernside, with their associated '12 hour challenge'.

The Westmoorland Showground is approximately 3 miles away and is the location for the annual Westmoorland County Annual Show.The Lancaster Canal is close by, where barge rides can sometimes be taken. The towpath can be followed to Kendal.
