About the neighbourhood
Close by the Thames, this area is steeped in history. Edward III had a manor house here, the Pilgrims set sail from the Mayflower pub; Pepys ate cherries at the end of the road; later, a thriving docks. It has been home to dockers for generations, to nordic merchant seamen (visit the Finnish, Swedish and Norwegian churches), and gangland associates of the Krays. Today, though a stone's throw from Tower Bridge, it is a residential area with a community feel. In walking distance: the River Thames, Tower Bridge, Tower of London, Southwark Cathedral, the Shard, ruins of Edward III's moated manor house, Shakespeare's Globe, London Bridge, Rotherhithe Tunnel, Brunel's Engine House.
