About the neighbourhood
WELLS Although the smallest city in England, the atmosphere is more like that of small country market town. The cathedral is one of the architectural highlights of Britain, with a marvellous chapter house. It also houses a wonderful clock, with mechanical knights who exchange blows every hour. Adjoining the Cathedral is the 13th century moated Bishop’s Palace - seat of the Bishop of Bath & Wells, famous for its swans who ring, twice daily, the bell beside the drawbridge for food. The Medieval Vicar’s Close is an architectural gem. Wednesday and Saturday are market days which are held in the central market place. For a good local pub the Fountain Inn at the bottom of St Thomas Street is highly recommended, superb food and very friendly.
Getting around
Wells bus station opposite Tesco Stores is 10 mins walk with links to Glastonbury, Street, Taunton, Cheddar. Bath/Bristol bus stop (hourly service) is a 3 minute walk from Cathedral View. . Castle Cary railway station is a 20 mins drive and is a through route to London and the south/south west coast.
