The Old Barn stands on its own at the end of the lane on our 35 acre organic smallholding on the slopes of Sugar Loaf Mountain in the Brecon Beacons National Park. It is surrounded by fields and National Trust woodland. We have lovingly restored the barn as a stylish and comfortable holiday home using traditional Welsh slate, oak, lime and eco-friendly materials. NB: LOW SEASON NIGHLY PRCE REDUCED FOR 4/5 NIGHT STAYS Inside the barn is a stylish mix of old and new, with contemporary furniture and lighting alongside traditional oak beams and antiques. The kitchen is superbly equipped, reflecting our own love of good food – a homemade cake and eggs from our free range ducks and chickens are part of the package, and organic lamb from the farm is available on request. In the living room a woodburner gives a cosy feel on chillier days, and there is wifi, a CD player with i-pod dock, a DVD player, board games and loads of books. The utility room has ample space for keeping all your outdoor gear. All three bedrooms are spacious and comfortable. Upstairs the bright, sunny West Bedroom has a kingsize bed, and the cosy East Bedroom has two 3'6" singles. They share a family bathroom. The Bat Room, with ensuite wetroom, is on ground level and has its own entrance off the courtyard. Towels and linen are included, all 100% cotton (cot available on request). Each bedroom also boasts its own Sugar Loaf view. Outside are two sunny seating areas for relaxing and drinking in the views. A barbecue is provided, and an old byre houses table tennis and table football. The Old Barn is an ideal base for events such as the Hay Festival (June) and Abergavenny Food Festival (September). The beaches of the Gower are just over an hour's drive, and the vibrant Welsh capital, Cardiff, is only 50 minutes away. There are three houses on the smallholding: the sixteenth century farmhouse where we live, The Old Barn, and the "new" farmhouse, The White House, also available for holidays. Each property is entirely private, and they do not overlook each other.

Beautifully converted barn in an idyllic setting
We have been coming back again and again to The Old Barn since 2014. It is just so perfect. The barn has everything you could need for a relaxing holiday and the setting at the foot of Sugar Loaf is amazing. There are walks straight from your doorstep yet it is only a few minutes drive into the lovely market town of Abergavenny. The hosts are delightful, on hand but not intrusive. They always leave homemade cake, eggs from their own chickens and other treats. Can’t recommend it highly enough.

Beautiful property in a beautiful location
Visited with family and was amazed at how close we were to the town but also how secluded and peaceful it was. Roz made sure we had everything we needed but left us to it (have had hosts be very overbearing before so was appreciated!). Bottle of wine, fresh fruit cake and some beautiful lamb were all very welcome upon arrival. The Barn is amazing, very cosy with great views from the comfort of the sofa. Log burner adds a rustic touch, and was very welcome during Storm Eunice! Despite the bad weather we managed to get a lot of hiking done, with a direct route up to nearby Sugar Loaf Mountain. This was a great place for the kids to get away from the electronics and TV for a few days, and we will definitely be back in the summer!

Pure Bliss And Relaxing!
"The Old Barn" was easy to find from the directions that were given. Total piece and quiet for the duration of the stay, and waking up to the sheep bleating was so refreshing to hear. The added touches (Milk, Eggs and Homemade Cake) were lovely too! The weather wasn't the best, but still managed to get to the top of the Sugarloaf which was a real achievement, with glorious views to the Beacons and England. The barn was spacious and had everything that was needed (including Covid instructions) which was professional. I would recommend this holiday rental and the owners to anyone at all. "Thank You for a wonderful stay"

We've been trying to put our finger on what makes the Old Barn so perfect...
And it's so many things... On each visit we feel so comfortable and at home, it's like returning to a place that is your own, it has everything you could need and want for a wonderful relaxing holiday. The owners Roz and Pip are welcoming yet not intrusive. They leave tasty treats like homemade cake and homelaid eggs. It setting is superbly peaceful with stunning views from every window. For walkers there are many walks straight from the door, onto the impressive Sugar Loaf Mountain. Also the town has some great places to eat out, if you can tear yourself away from the huge woodburner. The beds, bedding and mattresses are so so comfy. The roll top bath calls me for long soaks watching the stars. The house is immaculately clean, nothing is wanting at all. We can't wait to return

Very comfortable and relaxing stay
Four of us have just had a very enjoyable stay at the Old Barn. It is very well equipped, very comfortable and strikes a great balance between being very secluded and within easy reach of the facilities and shops of the nearby town of Abergavenny. It is warm, very eco-friendly and very quiet, with the birds in the valley providing soothing background sounds. There is a main pair of bedrooms with a shared bathroom and a separate bedroom with its own shower room. It works very well for two couples. The kitchen is well equipped and we had a warm welcome with bara brith, eggs from Roz and Pip’s hens, and a bottle of Malbec. The path to Sugar Loaf runs through the farm so it’s easy to head in that direction. The journey from Abergavenny to the Old Barn takes about 10 minutes and is an easy one. Roz is very easy and helpful to deal with regarding reservation and subsequent advice. We are going back.

Perfect in every way
The barn is beautifully converted and very comfortable. The owners, Roz and Pip, have obviously put a great deal of thought into making this holiday let nice. Special touches that stood out to us - A freshly baked cake and wine were waiting for us, feather duvets, good quality towels and the whole place was pristine. Location was perfect for what we wanted - long walks and close to cycle parks. We will definitely return.

peaceful, family and pet friendly barn conversion
We have had a great stay here (myself, husband, 3 children and 2 dogs). Lovely cosy barn conversion with log burner and underfloor heating. The children have enjoyed playing outdoors- including table football and seeing the newborn lambs. Arrived to find fresh eggs, milk and a cake to welcome us. We have enjoyed relaxing and lots of walks from our doorstep in the (mostly) sunny weather.

Our perfect place
We love The Barn. We have been coming here regularly since Roz & Pip did it up with all the eco-friendly and design care that makes it so special. We really only ever go walking from here, often direct out of the house and up to Sugar Loaf, and occasionally we drive a short distance to the central Beacons. But visits to Hay and Crickhowell are always a treat.

Perfect, perfect, perfect...
.... This is how we'd score the accomodation, the location and the owners. The Old Barn is everything you could wish for in a holiday let, it is beautifully furnished and extremely well equipped, Pip and Roz has made this place such a comfortable home from home. it has THE most magnificent views from the property, it is quiet and peaceful and has fabulous dark skies. The location is second to none, you can walk onto Sugar Loaf straight from the door and get Roz to show you the entrance to the Deri, a walk through old oak forest, that leads up to a magnificent plateau and beyond. It is well positioned for all the walking that you could desire in the Black Mountains/ Brecon Beacons. The town of Abergavenny is delightful with plenty of independent eateries and shops. The owners Roz and Pip are on hand if you need then, but not intrusive, they truly want your holiday to be special. Many thanks to them, we already look forward to our return.

Sunny Wales!
Our stay at Porto-y-Parc in the old barn was exactly what we needed to recharge the batteries after a busy few months. The setting is idyllic and very peaceful with few modern distractions. The owners were easy to deal with and the welcome ‘gift’ of fresh eggs, milk and a tasty cake were wonderful. Nothing was too much trouble, even the opportunity to be involved in the feeding of their lambs. Communication up to and during the stay was great and just added to the overall great experience. The Old Barn is comfortable and well equipped and the wood burner was great for a few chilly evenings. It is well located for some great walks, of varying difficulty, and close enough to town to pop out and get supplies. We had a wonderful stay and explored many of the local attractions, but not all of them which gives us a good excuse to plan another stay.

About the neighbourhood
Many visitors come here for walking. We provide OS maps and can suggest local walks and pubs for refreshment along your way! The rivers offer fantastic wild swimming and if you’re lucky enough to have snow, bring your sledge! Abergavenny is a pretty little town on the Usk, overlooked by mountains. It has a food market, quirky independents, excellent cafes and restaurants, a cinema, a small theatre and a Leisure Centre with pool. There are great castles and museums within half an hour's drive, and Hay-on-Wye, famous for its bookshops. Drive there through the Vale of Ewyas and over Gospel Pass - stunning! Or for some city buzz (castle, Principality Stadium, Millennium Centre, Doctor Who) Cardiff is an less than an hour away.
Getting around
Car is the easiest way to get about, with most of the key sights within half an hour's drive If you're fit enough to cycle up the hill to Porth-y-Parc, a bike would also be ideal - but remember this is a VERY hilly area! Guests without private transport usually arrive by train (Abergavenny Station) and then either get a taxi up to us (10 minutes, about £5) or walk (40 minutes, with a long climb over the last mile and a half). Once here, if you like walking, you don't need a car, as fabulous walks start from your door, with lovely pub / eating options attached. Supermarket deliveries are easily organised
