Capel Pennant was an absolutely lovely little cottage, seemingly in the middle of nowhere but really only a few minutes from town. We stayed over a weekend in late October. The fall air, the light mist, the sound of running water, the area around the cottage reminded us very much of our beloved mountains in East Tennessee. The view from the terrace across the valley was simply breathtaking. While small, the cottage is very well appointed. The sitting room is comfortably furnished and has a fireplace that not only helps with heating but adds a charming ambiance. There's a television but who needs that when you have a good book, a dancing fire, and the love of your life sitting next to you on the sofa? It was a very pleasant surprise one evening to come home from a day of excursions around North Wales to find that our hosts had come and started the fire ahead of our arrival. Little things like that mean a lot. We didn't do much cooking during our stay, but the kitchen gives one to believe that the owners must be accomplished cooks. The kitchen is very well equipped both with appliances and with utensils and service ware. The bath is also on the ground floor. It is a small space, but very well arranged to take advantage of every square inch. The loft bedroom is upstairs and looks down over the sitting room. The bed is comfortable and furnished with excellent linens, including very nice examples of Welsh pattern woven blankets. Capel Pennant sits on a working farm. There are geese and chickens and horses and dogs, but we found that all added to the overall charm of the place. I grew up on a farm, and the sound of roosters crowing and hens clucking was quite nice. And the quiet nights were absolutely amazing. The roads approaching the cottage are quite narrow and somewhat steep. We managed nicely without one, but in very wet weather you might want to think about a four wheel drive vehicle. Nick and Derek are wonderful hosts, and have an exquisite little gem in Capel Pennant. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay, and are already planning a return late next spring.

We were lucky enough to stay at Capel Pennant in the run up to Christmas. It was our first holiday with a new baby and the location was just as special as hoped. Huge thanks to Nick and Derek for being such accommodating hosts (leading us the property in the dark, lighting the stove before our arrival, and making sure we had enough space).

We were looking for a quiet escape over the New Year period and this is exactly what we got at Capel Pennant… The setting is rural which was just what we wanted, and the views over the valley are simply stunning. The Capel is beautiful and super cosy, the wood burner was lit for our arrival (many thanks to Derek for the daily wood supply) and we cooked every night in the really well equipped kitchen. Seeing all the animals on a daily basis was a joy and on a clear night they sky around Penant is full of stars, beautiful..! We didn’t venture out too far as we felt there was lots to explore in the local area, our highlights were…. Llangollen Steam Railway, Chirk Castle, Pontcysyllte Aqueduct and Pistyll Rhaeadr Waterfalls. Many thanks to Nick and Derek for being very accommodating and lovely hosts, we would totally recommend staying at Capel Pennant and we hope to return in the future…

This is one of those places you almost don’t want to recommend as you want to keep it to yourself! The accommodation is a converted chapel, all the mod cons you need but not at the expense of any character - the building is beautiful, lovingly converted and furnished to the standards you would see in some people’s homes. The view from the front terrace is something I could never tire of and plan to see it again in each season if I can - its beauty just makes you smile. Chickens and geese roam free - including into your garden, you’ll hear and see all types of birds and you can’t miss Nick and Derek’s imposing Irish Draught horses in the field at the bottom of the garden. The lovely hosts are there when and if you need them, otherwise just let you get on with it. Recommend it? Absolutely...just not when I want to go!! Thank you both for sharing your oasis with a girl from the Smoke! Mxx

Capel Pennant is a wonderful place for a peaceful and tranquil break. Wake up to the sounds of the birdsong. Nick was a perfect host along with Derek and Peter who especially helped us. Sitting on your private patio watching the evening sky filled with stars was totally magical.

Just wonderful. Beautiful remote setting with views along the valley. Surrounded by interesting and beautiful places to visit. A real getaway, very well presented, snug and comfortable accommodation. All you need to bring are your supplies, everything else is there. Lovely hosts who obviously take a pride in making your stay pleasurable without intruding. We will be delighted to return. Highly Recommended.

Beautiful place , views , everything about this was great ! Will need confidence in driving through the lanes to get there if you are a city folk ! The local pub was easy walk to down hill , took a bit longer coming back ! Would stay again.

Some fine, sunny weather mid-April meant that spring swept into this beautiful upland valley during our stay: starry nights and trees fuzzy with leaf buds. The valley seems very remote, down narrow lanes, but is only really 5 minutes or so to Chirk or Llangollen by car. The walk to Chirk Castle is about a mile - the C17th manor house that this was once private chapel to was once part of the castle estate. This area is an excellent base for exploring the beautiful Berwyn mountains, waterfalls, canals & aqueducts and historic houses. The stone chapel manages to be dinky and spacious at the same time, with light pouring in through doors and windows, and a double height ceiling. A cosy bed, complete with Welsh blanket, is perched up a wooden stair, looking down on the living room through a gothic arch. It is all beautifully designed: the things I remember best from the interior - the commanding wing-backed chair by wood-burning stove, charming tapestries and paintings on a suitably religious theme, a hymn board, the terracotta tiled floor with warm rugs, and a great shower (I normally scald or freeze myself - this works!) .... and everything very comfortable, very well designed, very well thought through. Though there are plenty of good places to eat out round about (and a really nice village stores plus a pub that is walking distance for those without a car) the kitchen is great so you will also want to spend time eating on the terrace or lighting candles and sitting round the stove. There is a sunny stone terrace with table and chairs looking down the valley and there are sheep, geese, Irish Draught horses and three friendly dogs around. Lots of useful information about places to visit in the chapel, and incredibly helpful and nice owners - I hope we are able to visit again soon as we want to see more of this lovely part of the world.

About the neighbourhood
Pennant is sited in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty within the Ceiriog Valley, a quiet backwater, a jewel in the crown of North Wales, a long meandering valley starting at the Chirk Castle estate and winding up through the villages of Pontfadog and Glyn Ceiriog up to the remote hamlet of Llanarmon Dyffryn Ceiriog with its wonderful coaching inns. The magical town of Llangollen with its steam heritage railway, the Ladies of Llangollen's home Plas Newydd, horse drawn canal boats and international music festival is only three miles from Pennant and walkable along an old drover's route. The Llangollen canal is part of the Froncysyllte Aquaduct World Heritage Site, again only a short distance from Pennant. Pennant is also close to Offa's Dyke, an ancient earth works defining the Engli...
