Good central base
We booked here for a March timeshare week as it had a good RCI points value. We flew from Cardiff to Rome; most of the ferries to Capri go from Naples. The jet boats take around 50 minutes and cost around 21 euros one way with 2 euros for each piece of large luggage; there is high density seating with little chance of a view due to spray on the windows. The slow ferry takes 1 hr 20 mins and costs around 15 euros one way with plenty of outside seating to enjoy the view of Vesuvius etc. We went out by ferry and came back by jetboat. The timetables warn of the possibility of cancellations due to bad weather; booking on the day at the harbour (be aware that there are two different ferry departure points in Naples) is the norm (advance booking can be risky) and thus allow time. There is quite a choice for rail travel between Rome and Naples. The all-stops service by Trenitalia takes just over 3 hours and costs12 euros one way. Fast trains take just over 1 hour and are run by two operators; Trenitalia has up to three trains per hour, Italo has one train per hour and is about 20% cheaper. Fares are up to 49 euros each one way, but significant savings can be made by booking on-line several weeks in advance for a specific train (change or cancellation not allowed). We went out by Trenitalia with an advance booking at 25 euros each and returned with Italo using on-the-day tickets at 39 euros each due to the risk of ferry disruption. A taxi between the harbour and Naples Centrale station is around 15 euros. From Capri’s Marina Grande, catch the funicular (tickets 2 euros from the shed selling ferry tickets -substitute bus operating during our week - luggage can be delivered separately straight to the hotel). Turn left for Villa Igea - fairly central in Capri Town. You come straight into Umberto Piazza - go through the 3rd archway clockwise from the clocktower. Look for the eye-level right-hand wall tile confirming you are on Via le Botteghe; narrow pathways like this are the main way of getting around Capri Town and the outskirts - watch out for electric delivery carts. Carry on for 400 yards and Villa Igea is on the right - before you start going uphill. At Villa Igea, we had a compact, slightly basic, but clean and comfortable one bedroom unit on the ground floor with a pleasant terrace giving a coastal view. In the living room, opening a set of fitted wardrobe doors revealed the partial kitchen - very partial with a 2 ring hob, sink and fridge: no toaster, oven, microwave and kettle. Utensils/crockery were adequate - including the traditional moka pot for coffee. There was no electricity charge; washing up liquid, dishcloth and sponge were sold at reception for 3 euros TV is Italian language only; to get good wifi, ask for a booster and place it in the nearest socket to the corridor English-speaking staff man reception from 08.00 to 20.00 each day; cleaning is available every day. Food shopping was done on the way to Piazza Umberto at traditional shops: baker, greengrocer, fishmonger etc; a Capri supermarket is a UK corner shop. We were certainly made welcome and were comfortable - and agreed that the RCI Silver Crown rating was justified Capri is a small island: 3 miles by 1 mile; our recommendation is the 2 hour round the island boat trip for 18 euros. Most of the time we were happy to relax at Villa Igea with daily walks to Belvedere Tragara or Arco Naturale. The weather in mid-March was mostly sunny, but chillier than we expected - the early afternoon temperature was 55-60oF. The seasonal Gucci-type designer shops and the Umberto Piazza cafes were getting ready for summer opening; coffee at 6 euros per cup indicates the general price level. We would not want to be in Capri in high season, but whenever you go to Villa Igea - pack a travel kettle.
