Villa Monziani is a 17th C Villa, one of the oldest houses on San Giulio Island, lakeside, at water level, with full view of the lake and mainland Orta. On the ground floor there is the garden, which stretches the length of the house (1/3 in the shade of the bower and 2/3 in the sun), the kitchen and a small lounge, which both open onto the garden, and a bathroom. The boathouse is adjacent to the garden and has an outdoor hot shower. You can also find water sport amenities like a surfboard, flippers, lie-lows etc. There is also a lakeside wooden jetty useful as a sundeck for late afternoon sunbathing and accessible by the local larger taxi-boats. On the ground floor there is also a new bedroom with en-suite bathroom. On the first floor there is a very large lounge with a fireplace and a 2nd master bedroom. The balcony on the first floor runs the length of the house and an outdoor stone staircase leads to the garden below. On the mezzanine there is the 3rd bedroom with twin beds and an en-suite bathroom. On the second floor there is the 4th bedroom with en-suite bathroom and a small lounge area. Also on the second floor there is the 5th bedroom, a studio with a divan bed and a spectacular view of the lake. The house has been completely refurbished and modernised bearing in mind its past history, respecting its original plan. The ceilings are all original and designer furniture and illumination enhances the traditional settings, giving a sense of discrete luxury and homeliness. The garden is manicured and from the garden wall you can dive into the water, whose cleanliness is certified, or enter walking through the boat house. In the garden you can find a variety of spices which you can use to garnish your cooking. There is also a Weber BBQ. A very magic atmosphere surrounds this island. The green hills of the pre-alpine lake and the small villages dotted on its shore give a feeling of tranquillity. Orta's very attractive 18th century houses, make a colourful backdrop to its square, which is like a parlour with cafés, benches under shady trees, arches hiding shops and the full view of the fascinating island of San Giulio. A stunning view of the lake, of the town of Pella and of the Madonna del Sasso Church can be had from the Sacro Monte Franciscan Church above Orta. It is fascinating to stroll in Orta's narrow, cobbled streets and admire the Baroque houses that line them. To reach the island (a mere 400m) guests can use our boat, included in the price, with or without engine, or use the public taxi boats. The boat is an aluminium unsinkable 8HP outboard engine (no license needed). It is simple to use and we will show you how to use it. We also have a larger 40HP (electronic ignition/steering wheel) available for rent. You can park in our locked garage on the mainland, also included in the price. We have a second covered space in the same garage for an eventual second car. We meet our guests in Orta in the main square in front of the docks, show them the location of the garage nearby, take them across to the island in our boat, show them the house, answer any questions and leave. We return the day of their departure. A small apartment on the top floor belongs to my cousins. They are completely independent. They use the back entrance to the house and the central staircase to get to their flat. As for us, the house is their second home, so they might be or might not be there. They are very nice people to get on with and do not intrude. They can share 1/6 of the garden. More

We have a septic tank so please do not put solid waste down the toilets but use baskets, we supply ecological soap/powders etc. Make sure you do too. Any damage to the boat or the engine, caused by your mismanagement, must be paid for on receiving bill from our boat-yard company Cusionautica. Any damage to furniture, light fixtures ecc. must be compensated. We do not charge for breakage of crockery and glass-wear but please inform us. Please treat the house as if it were your own.

About the neighbourhood

The town of Orta, on the lake shore in front of the island, with its 18th century houses is like a parlour with cafés. There are benches under the shady trees, arches hiding shops and a full view of the fascinating island of San Giulio. To reach it (a mere 400 metres) guests can use our boat, with or without engine, using oars, or the public transport boats (9am till 7pm). There is a market in Orta square every Wednesday. An English poetry festival takes place in Orta in September and a festival of classical music in June and September on the island at Villa Tallone. Fireworks in August are famous in Omegna, at northern end of the lake. There are no shops on the island, just a restaurant/bar and a souvenir shop, but Orta offers a large variety of food shops, restaurants of all levels, ...

Getting around

A car is useful if you plan to travel a lot to visit the other nearby lakes like Lago Maggiore or Como. Otherwise there is a train station at Orta Miasino (2km) or bus services from Novara/Domodosola. Many guests have recently used local taxi/minibus services to go to and from Malpensa airport (costs around €80 one way) or to visit nearby shopping centres or places of interest.
