In the lower sections of this coast have settled sand and quartz grains of rare beauty in the features tall, towering cliffs overlooking the sea acting as a lookout. The uniqueness of this part of Sardinia is provided by the extraordinary sensation of continuity between land and sea. Oristano is the youngest and smallest province of Sardinia. It is located on the west coast, near the longest river in the Tirso. Founded by the people fleeing from Tharros because of the barbarian invasions, Oristano was the capital of the Judge of Arborea. At the time of the Aragonese conquest of the city, in order to rid of the Pisan, fìrst the Aragonese and then rose up against them. Oristano was the center of the uprising, the cuileader were Mariano IV, Hugh and Eleonora d'Arborea, which stipulated a collection of laws, the Charter Logu, then extended to other parts dellaSardegna, and in force until 1827. On the death of the Judge Eleonora was suppressed, and Oristano became a marquis submissive to the Aragonese. In 1470 Leonardo Alagon, after a fight against the Count of Quirra, which culminated in the Battle of Uras, managed to conquer the city, but a few years after King Ferdinand and confiscated the goods of the Marquis took the city after the Battle of Macon (1478), in which Leonardo Alagon was defeated and imprisoned. Under the Spanish Oristano went through a period of decline due to the barbarian invasions and the plague. With the coming of the Savoy, the city had a slow recovery, and became an important commercial and agricultural center.
