Mount Pleasant, Bequia, St. Vincent and the Grenadines

The Old Fort, Historic Estate is the only fully restored historic plantation in St. Vincent and the Grenadines dating back to the eighteenth-century when the French first started settling the West Indies. Set high atop Mt. Pleasant with an estate that stretches all the way down to the Caribbean Sea, it features acres of orchards and views to beat anything you would find out on the open ocean. Its lush grounds are covered in traveller’s palms, breadfruit, tamarind, banana and mango trees, surrounding one of the most beautiful pools in the world, happily slip sliding its watery way over the edge. Upon discovering the property in 1978 the owners began a lengthy restoration of the estate in the original French Colonial style, using timber from local forests and the same stone as that of the ruins. Over three decades it has been run...

Overall this flat/apartment was excellent.
Very clean, modern, in a great location (for tube & parks). Rooms were of a good size, and the courtyard was great (and would have been used more had the weather been nicer!). There was a high chair available to hire too, which was great.
The bed mattress must have been changed since the last review, as it was amazing!
It is on a bit of a main road, but you can't really hear it from the flat. Great for taxis too.
Wifi was a bonus, but the extra power point next to the modem in the lounge room, which would have made an excellent iPad/iPhone charging station, was obstructed by the heater. Really minor issue, but annoyed me!
The only niggle I have with the flat is that the steps leading down from the street to the front door were steep and narrow, and difficult with 2 large heavy suitcases and a toddler. This is not mentioned anywhere in the description of the place, nor are there photos. Because of this I would say it...

About the neighbourhood
While one reads all about the more visited Caribbean destinations such as the Virgin Islands, Jamaica, the Caymans, and St. Martin, it's often hard to find information about St. Vincent and the Grenadines. One reason is that St. Vincent, a bountiful island with vast coconut and banana plantations, in the past never primarily depended on tourism as a source of income, and another is that the Grenadines are remote and can only be reached by yachts or commuter airlines. As a result, these islands are the perfect haven for travellers searching for quiet, beautiful getaways surrounded in natural splendours, rather than islands full of glitzy hotels, casinos and jet loads of tourists. The romantic island of Bequia (pronounced Bek-way) was named the island of the clouds (although some now say... more

How to get there
Airport: J. F. Mitchel Airport: 6.5 km
Ferry: Port Elizabeth: 2.0 km
At first glance, Bequia may seem remote and difficult to get to but do not let this deter you from visiting this wonderful island. There are several international airports throughout the Caribbean that serve as “gateways”, from where you can then connect with a local carrier to St. Vincent and the Grenadines. Some of the major international airports include Barbados, St. Lucia, Grenada, Trinidad and Martinique, all offering daily flights to St. Vincent from where you can then take a ferry to Bequia. Most visitors find it more convenient to fly into Barbados' Grantley Adams International Airport, as there are also direct flight connections to Bequia.
