Sticky End is an ideal base for exploring the region including the nearby busy market & impressive public school towns of Oakham and Uppingham, and is only 10 miles from historic Stamford (filming for the 2005 movie Pride & Prejudice and TV's Middlemarch). Rutland is a truly unspoiled rural gem in the heart of Middle England. Rutland Water, along with the surrounding countryside and villages, provide a beautiful back drop for sailing, water sports, fishing, cycling, bird watching, golf and walking. Traditional country pubs offer excellent cuisine, stately homes such as Belvoir Castle, magnificent Burghley House (home of the famous Burghley Horse Trials and popular film set) and National Trust properties including Woolsthorpe Manor (Sir Issac Newton's Home) and Belton House at Grantham are within a short drive, whilst shopping tends to be 'unique and antique' and a pleasurable world away from the shopping centre chains. Geoff Hamilton's legacy of his famous Barnsdale Gardens are close by. The Stamford Shakespeare Festival (June-August) is held annually at Tolethorpe Hall where a picnic on the lawns, a stroll around the lawn, pond and flowerbeds and shrubberies all add to the magic of a visit to Rutland Open Air Theatre to experience the annual summer Shakespeare Festival (9th June-29th August 2020 - Love's Labour's Lost, Romeo & Juliet, The Importance of Being Earnest). Rockingham Motor Speedway and Rockingham Castle lie just to the south of Rutland. The Stunning Belvoir Castle stands splendidly in the Vale of Belvoir just a short drive to the north. Richard III: In the summer of 2012, archaeologists from the University of Leicester, working with Leicester City Council and the Richard III Society, unearthed the ruins of the lost medieval Grey Friars church and within the ruins, the grave of a battle-scarred warrior. Until Spring 2014, The Guildhall, in the shadow of Leicester Cathedral, hosts a major exhibition telling the story of King Richard III, his life and times and the search for his lost remains. From nearby Oakham, Little Thatch guests can catch a direct train into Leicester city centre, or indeed drive in approximately 40 minutes. London: From Oakham you can also catch a train to Peterborough on the East Coast Mainline for connections directly into London for a day trip to the capital. ** Sister property to local Rutland Thatched Cottages: Little Thatch, Seaton, Near Uppingham, Rutland - Property No. 1130618 NB: Both our cottages operate a strictly 'Non-smoking' & 'No pets' policy. Great property and perfect for exploring Rutland
Stayed for 5 nights in early March. The welcome from owner Martin was warm and the cottage had everything we needed. The decor is quirky and full of interest (especially for book and antique lovers!), and we enjoyed a cosy fire every evening. The kitchen is well equipped and the bedrooms are very comfortable. Cottesmore is a great base for exploring all that Rutland has to offer: most of the places we visited during our stay were no more than 20 minutes away by car. For foodies like us there’s a wide range of great gastro-pubs within easy reach, but check with your destination before turning up, as many aren’t open on Mondays, and some not on Tuesdays either. All in all I’d recommend Rutland in general and Sticky End in particular to anyone seeking a relaxing UK break.

Dream Cottage
We stayed at Sticky End for 9 nights, and it was really wonderful. The village is very pretty with lovely walks. The cottage itself was spotlessly clean and very comfortable, lots of extra touches that ensured our stay was so enjoyable. The beds were very comfortable with beautiful linen that was so much appreciated. We received a very warm welcome and nothing was too much trouble if we had any queries. A unique place to stay in a beautiful part of England.

Exceptional and ultra clean cottage with many eclectic and quirky features
This cottage was immaculate, everything we needed was provided. It was very tastefully decorated, unique, comfy beds, spotless - we could not fault a thing, the attention to detail was excellent. The owners could not have been more welcoming and went out of their way to help us settle in - we didn't want to leave and would definitely visit again. In the visitors book were many repeat guests - we hope to be too. We very highly recommend this cottage for anyone looking for a break away in this area, which is ideal for visiting Burghley, Belvoir Castle, Barnsdale Gardens (Geoff Hamilton) many local National trust properties and Rutland Water, as they are all on the door step .

Perfect retreat
Sticky End is a stunning cottage with all that is needed for a perfect stay in a beautiful part of England. The attention to period detail is outstanding. Julia and Martin are wonderful hosts and provide plenty of information on the local attractions in the area of which there are many. We cannot recommend this property highly enough. Quite excellent.

Exceptional
A supremely comfortable cottage in the centre of Cottesmore, comprehensively and thoughtfully provisioned by the owners, Martin and Julia, and ideally situated to enjoy all that Rutland has to offer. We couldn’t have felt more at home.

Even better than expected!
We stayed here for a week and were blown away by the cottage and its contents. We loved all parts of it from the quirky study to the modern bathroom and the attention to detail is exceptional. We will definitely be back again!

Grade 11 listed little gem
Thank you Martin for coming to welcome us on our arrival and for the welcomed treats milk & cakes, our first taste from Hambleton Bakery. It is a lovely cottage, just like some of the previous comments, this Grade II listed little gem is more like a home than a holiday let. It oozes character, and the interior is a perfect blend of homely, country living, with charm and quirkiness. Every time you look around you see something new. It is spotlessly clean, there is every thing you would need and the kitchen is very well equipped, Martin & Julia have thought of everything. And the A-Z guide provided was very helpful. We hope to return to this lovely area sometime and we certainly know where we would stay ! Thank you !

Lovely, would stay again.
Very comfortable cottage, quirky antique decor and artefacts, fascinating just looking through everything there including the tiny but packed library. Warm welcome and friendly, informative hosts. Lovely small gardens including a terrific secluded sun trap to enjoy a quiet few hours. Perfect location for visiting Rutland Water, Uppingham, Oakham, Stamford etc...

Such a lovely holiday
My husband has fished Rutland Water for many years but this year we decided to book a cottage for me to go too. I have never visited the area before. When we arrived we were warmly greeted by Martin, the owner, and shown around the cottage. Our first impression was 'Wow, what a beautiful place.' It felt like 'Home from Home' This feeling continued throughout the entirety of our stay. The beds were very comfortable, as was the furniture. There was so much to look at and read, we could have spent much longer there. The heating was perfect and could be set for your own preference, also as much hot water as you needed. We have never stayed in such a well equipped cottage before and have vowed to return. We had the worst May weather on record for our stay but it did not spoil our holiday at all. However, we look forward to exploring the area in much closer detail in, hopefully, less inclement weather. We do not have any negative to say whatsoever but we do say a huge thank you to Martin and Julia for allowing us to share their beautiful cottage for a short time.

About the neighbourhood
Rutland is a haven for cyclists, walkers & those who enjoy the quiet pace of country life. Rutland Water hosts an aray of water sports, a pleasure boat, wild life and hosts the annual British Birdfair event at Egleton Nature Reserve (17-19 August 2007). Melton Mowbray including its reknowned Pork Pie shop lies just to the north of the county. Stamford is a beautiful historic town with excellent shops and on its outskirts boasts the jewel of Burghley House home to the Burghley Horse Trials (03-06 September 2009) and a popular location for filming. The Stamford Shakespeare Festival (8 June-29 August 2009 - The Tempest, A Midsummer Night's Dream & Oliver Twist) is held annually at Tolethorpe Hall where a picnic on the lawns, a stroll around the lawn, pond and flowerbeds and shrubberies all add to the magic of a visit to Rutland Open Air Theatre. Three stunning film locations for the Da Vinci Code movie, Burghley House, Belvoir Castle & Lincoln Cathederal are all within a short drive. Rockingham Motor Speedway and Rockingham Castle lie just 25 minutes drive south. The Stunning Belvoir Castle stands splendidly in the Vale of Belvoir just 25 minutes drive to the north.
