MONKLEIGH COACHMANS COTTAGE OVERVIEW COACHMANS is a delightful self catering cottage situated through an archway in a cobbled courtyard in the grounds of Monkleigh village's old rectory, parts of which date back over 400 years. Although called COACHMANS COTTAGE it is in fact believed to have been the original bakehouse for the main house and the original bread oven is still in situ to the side of the wood burning stove. Coachman's can be found in a very peaceful situation on the edge of Monkleigh village and within easy walking distance of the friendly village inn, The Bell, which also serves great food. The house has extensive gardens of approximately 3 acres, plus a large wildlife garden with a large pond, an ideal spot to chill out and commune with nature. These are available to those occupying the cottage to enjoy. Garden furniture and a small charcoal barbeque are provided. Please note that these grounds are extensive and unfenced so children will need supervision. This cottage is in a stunning rural location and forms part of the traditional cobbled courtyard setting of original buildings to the main house. It is compact and has a wood burner making it a cosy, romantic hideaway spot for two. Off road parking is available directly in front of the cottage. LIVING AREAS Within the level open plan social space the wood burning stove is a focal point, and provides ample cosy heat whatever time of year you visit, additional wood is provided free of charge and can be found across the courtyard. KITCHEN / DINING The cosy combined lounge/kitchen/dining room has exposed beams giving a rustic feel. The dining table and chairs seat two and on request a high chair can be supplied. A useful under stair cupboard contains such items including a vacuum cleaner, ironing board and brooms etc. The kitchen area has a modern built in electric cooker and hob, microwave oven and a very good selection of kitchen equipment. There is a freezer along with a washing machine and additional sink facilities in an adjacent building, the former dairy. BEDROOMS The cottage comfortably sleeps two adults in the spacious bedroom which has an antique double bed and dressing table. The natural wood floor and coverings add to the period feel and give a wonderful feeling of intimacy. A built in wardrobe ensures guests have ample storage space. The size of the room allows space for a travel cot. BATHROOMS Adjacent to the bedroom is the bathroom with a full size bath with hand held shower attachment. The wood effect laminate floor creates a feeling of warmth. For added convenience, a heated towel rail and electric shaver point have been provided. OUTDOORS Guests have free use of approximately 3 acres of extensive gardens, fields and grounds. Feel free to meander through the original walled garden and fields. The pond is an eye catching feature, however, it is unfenced so careful supervision of younger ones is required. Wood for the wood burner is stored under the linhay and is free for your convenience. The cottage is cosy and traditional with fireplace and old beams. The bedroom upstairs has lots of old style charm. There's a modern kitchen, very convenient. When we rented the cottage, the place wasn't very clean to start with (there was loads of dust under the bed, the window and door downstairs was grimy, there were cobwebs in the bathroom) and it smelled so stale that I had to keep the door open all the time we were in. There wasn't enough pressure in the water mains so taking a shower (also having to crouch in a bath to do so) wasn't very easy. It's a nice enough place to stay for a few days but I'd recommend a bit more care to make a good first impression.

Loved this place and would definitely return. Dont be fooled when you arrive and pull up into the rambling courtyard outside of the cottage..it adds to the character. Although its quite compact it is so cosy, warm and peaceful with a pub up the road (5 min walk) serving lovely food and very friendly although the walk up is a bit "hairy" in the dark as there are a few bends in the road and no pavement or lighting. Such a lovely welcome when we arrived lovely touches like a xmas tree wiv lights and chocolates, a lovely fire ready to light and a wonderful cream tea laid out for us. The bed was so comfortable the best I have ever slept in while away and i was,nt waking up until 9.30 most days. Lovely area and not so far to travel to the beautiful beaches nearby..ideal for the dog. This is an ideal place if you require peace quiet and relaxation which we definitely got..to go out in the day for nice walks and return late afternoon light the fire and chill. Can,t wait to visit again. Thankyou to the owners.

We had a lovely week at Coachmans. The setting was in a lovely location and the cottage had everything we needed. A cream tea was awaiting our arrival with two biscuits for our dog, which we thought was a lovely touch!! Sue and Tom were very friendly and very approachable, informing us as to where we could walk the dog within their gardens and to make us aware they were only next door if we had any further requirements - which we didn't, the cottage was very well equipped. We went to North Devon after not having visited for several years and the cottage was perfectly placed to easily access the many places we wanted to visit. We were very lucky with the weather and enjoyed many days on the beautiful beaches in the area. Must do's are: Instow Beach, cycling the Tarka Trail (we hired bikes from Fremington Quay, they were very helpful) The Golden Fry chipshop at Westward Ho (the best we have ever tasted and used more than we probably should have), Northam Burrows (walk along the beach to the end of the Burrows, fantastic, and a large pool of safe water by the visitors centre for the dog), Hockings Ice Cream (don't buy anything else!) and a visit to Lydford Gorge ( about an hour away but a beautiful if not a little strenuous walk along the bottom of the gorge) We will definitely be returning and Coachmans will be top of our list.
