The Durham and Northumberland coasts have long sandy beaches, and for those who want to be more active there are great walks in the hills and dales. The Sage in Gateshead hosts an extensive programme of concerts, and the flat is ideally placed for the spectacular Kynren show in nearby Bishop Auckland each summer – it is advisable to book in advance if you want to see this while you are here. The castle itself is regularly open for guided tours throughout the year - please check the Brancepeth Castle entry elsewhere on TripAdvisor for more details if you want your stay to coincide with a tour. The castle is a historic monument dating back to before the 14th century, and all income from this holiday let goes towards its upkeep.

Cosy Castle Stay
Lovely apartment in Brancepeth Castle a few miles outside Durham. Very comfortable with all amenities you need. Easy drive into Durham & surrounding area. Good communication and information in apartment. Netflix & Now TV very welcome as weather was not great due to Storm Ciara. Definitely recommend

Fantastic place to stay
Wonderful place to stay, a real castle, complete with portcullis. Felt like stepping back in time. Quartermaster's is complete with mod cons necessary, e.g. great heating and comfy furnishings. Owners friendly when they checked we'd arrived OK and had everything we needed. Much better than a soulless hotel when visiting our offspring at university. Good place as close to great food at The Brawns Den, attractions of Durham and the North Pennines. Worth popping over to St Brandon's Church to see a building which is both ancient and modern due to restoration after a devastating fire in the late 90's. Be aware Church bells rung for 30 mins before Sunday morning service.

Delightful holiday apartment in a lovely location
Quartermaster's is a real gem: a beautiful, well-appointed apartment tucked against the east curtain wall of the spectacular Brancepeth Castle. The apartment, as well as the Castle, are steeped in history - you almost expect knights in suits of armour to arrive on horseback, Tudor noblemen plotting their next political moves or a platoon of the Durham Light Infantry to come marching past! In fact, it's now a tranquil and relaxing place, with a romantic Grade 1 castle attached. The owner's attention to detail stands out in this pretty holiday home - spotlessly clean, thoughtfully furnished, it has all the equipment you need, including comfortable outdoor furniture, so we were able to breakfast in the sunshine on the sheltered patio. Just go!

A truly beautiful place to stay!
Arriving at Brancepeth castle was an absolute pleasure, greeted by tall trees and a magical scene that takes you back to tales of knights and dragons... We had a wonderful rest here at the castle, the flat is so comfortable and pretty. It comes complete with everything you could possibly need for a short break. The nearby walks were enjoyable, we also attended the service at St Brandon's, which sits just a stones throw away. The people there were very warm and friendly. Thank you James and Sharon for all your hard work. We will definitely return!!

A special and peaceful place
We have stayed at Quartermaster's on several occasions. It has a wonderful location and provides a great base for exploring Co. Durham and the surrounding beautiful countryside. James is a very friendly and helpful owner and we were fortunate to enjoy a fascinating tour of such a historic castle. We love to visit Quartermaster's and hope to return in 2019!

Unique Experience
This is a cosy and quiet ground floor apartment, fairly new inside but still with character. We stayed for 6 days but it could have been longer. The castle has a very interesting history which is still evolving - thank you James and Sharon for your tour and considerate hosting.

Supern
We stayed for a long weekend at Quartermaster’s and we had a fabulous time. The apartment itself is perfectly appointed and ideal for two adults and a child and also boasts Netflix and good WiFi. The highlight though simply has to be the location. As a fan of all things historical it really was special to stay so close to such an impressive building in such quiet and peaceful surroundings. Hard to fault anything about it and would definitely return.
