Holiday Rental House
Black Dog House is a lovely place to unwind, relax and enjoy. The house and the surrounding countryside have something to offer all ages and interests. It's grand for couples, groups of friends and families, with flexible accommodation and every comfort provided. The house is actually two 19th Century stone-built terraced cottages, joined together to provide a fine place to stay over 3 floors, and has been fully refurbished - I should know, i was in there grappling the RSJ's through the bedroom window! There is plenty of space for everyone to do their own thing indoors, whilst the front garden is good for breakfast, and the rear yard is a place for evening drinks or a small BBQ. The set-up can be seen quite easily from the pictures, but essentially it's a walk in to the dining room area...Black Dog House is a lovely place to unwind, relax and enjoy. The set-up can be seen quite easily from the pictures, but essentially it's a walk in to the dining room area with a wood burner, then through to a large sitting room with an open fire. The kitchen is off this will a large range of 'stuff' to get cooking with. Out the back there is a small office area with table and computer point with a door to the back yard. A jump over the wall and you're in the fields! Upstairs there are two doubles, one of which has an en-suite, a twin bedded room and a bathroom. On the top floor there is a big room (ideal for locking away children!) with a large combination of beds available. The location itself is hard to beat, with breathtaking moorland, woods, mountains, rivers, SERIOUS waterfalls and charming small towns. If you visit once, you'll likely want to come back for more .... 3 Star Gold self-catering award through the AA Tourism England organisation. I have been offered four stars for a max of 8, or stick with the Gold award for the higher occupancy which I have done - not that there is any bias involved! Who has stayed: Since starting two years ago, we have had a huge variety of groups stay, many of which have taken the trouble to give Black Dog House good reviews. It'd be best to read their words below, but in summary I would say we can successfully cater for most peoples needs, so do get in contact if there is anything that you'd like clarifying.

LOVELY FAMILY WEEKEND
We have just returned from a lovely long weekend here with our daughter, son and their respective partners. Very spacious, yet cosy cottage, equipped with absolutely everything you need for a self catering holiday. Plenty of tourist information in the cottage to plan days out and games, and musical instruments, provided for long winter nights in. The cottage was very clean, but being dog friendly, expect a few marks on the pale coloured carpets. Our 2 dogs loved it there, when we could get them in from spying on the chickens in the field at the bottom of the garden! The only drawback was the pub opposite was not open for 2 of our 3 night stay. We enjoyed an excellent meal the first night but they close lunchtime Sundays until Tuesdays. Any return visits by us will be booked around the pub's timetable as the food, staff and atmosphere are all excellent there.

Super very large family friendly cottage.
Cottage well exceeded our expectations, we stayed with own children and grand-children ranging from age 3yrs to 8yrs. Superb location with plenty to do close by. Children especially enjoyed playing in the loft room with it's many toys and also splashing around in the water across the road behind the pub. The playground across the road was perfect for the younger children. Cottage was well equipped and had everything including thermos flasks when we went on a picnic. We also enjoyed some excellent meals out at the coach and horses in Eastgate and The Hare and Hounds across the road. Everyone enjoyed the scenic walks and cycling too. Great location, I'm sure that we will return again sometime in the future.

A little (BIG) gem
A little gem of a find but a massive house! Couldn't believe how much space there was in this cottage. A huge dining area, huge sitting room, kitchen, boot room area, 2 huge beds upstairs 1 with en suite, bathroom, twin room and a big double bed in the loft with loads of space. 4 adults and 3 kids, we rattled round the place. The log burners in the dining room and sitting room were amazing, really heated the rooms and made them cosy. Everything was so clean and so many lovely touches made it a home from home. There was even a slow cooker and thermos mugs in the kitchen! The only negative was nothing to do with the cottage......the pub over the road kept what we considered to be 'odd hours'. We got there at 4pm on a Monday and it didn't open until 6.45pm the next day! A half hour (very pleasant) walk to the next village to the Golden Lion solved the issue although we got there at 5.30 and that one didn't open until 6! The kind owner opened up early when we rung the mobile number stuck in the window! A very very pleasant stay but make sure you have wet weather plans as well as fine weather plans - there is very little to do within decent walking distance if the weather is rubbish. If you have small children (12 months - 7ish) there is a brilliant play cafe about 30 mins away in Consett if you don't mind driving out. Believe & Be - highly recommended if it's raining!

Perfect week for all the family
Eight of us stayed in black dog house for one week. It had everything we needed to have a fun, relaxing time. Good location and pub across the road (excellent food). Was so cosy at night with the fire burning playing board games. The kids loved the top floor to themselves. Thank you

Best family freindly house ever
5 adults 3 children family, plenty of space, fresh white sheets, comfy pillows, ample towels, vast array of kitchenware/ china/utensils, coffee machine (much to my husbands delight) Working fire place, all logs provided, used them sorry! house not cold, just added to the ambience of the comfy room. The area is outstandingly beautiful, fabulous countryside, wonderful walks for adults and young children. Visited Killhope mine, which is about a mile away, very informative, kids loved the interaction. Took a trip to Beamish museum, which is over an hour away by car, need a full day there to see it all, really takes you back in time. Trams, old farm cottages etc. Martin the owner and Claire housekeeper, nothing to much trouble, all went smoothly, but hey Martin that first phone call!!!! hahaha Saving pennies to do it all again.

Nice cosy house, great stay
Black Dog House is a welcoming, cosy, comfortable home from home providing ideal accommodation for a larger party. We spent a brilliant December week with family . We even had half a day of snow. Great ambience - blazing log fire and woodburner. Children's playground opposite and super walks from Cottage door.15 mins to the Weardale Railway Polar Express trip and Stanhope. We had everything we needed and more in this well equipped house. The only issue we had was with the door locks, we struggled a few times getting the door open or closed. Also a very very special thank you to the housekeeper who was very friendly and even helped us finding a lost child's IPad.

Many thanks Lesley and glad all had a good time and big plates of grub. Sorry I couldn't order better weather, but as you say, it is grand just to be out in such beautiful unspoilt countryside; sometimes the weather seems to enhance it! Would love to see you back and would happily give a nice discount for a returning customer. All the best, Martin

About the neighbourhood
Westgate lies within the Wear Valley which is part of the Pennines designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty; perfect for mountain biking, bird watching, riding, painting, photography and even skiing. There are lots of things to see locally - museums, mines, castles, gardens, railways, historic cities, Hadrian’s Wall 30 minutes to the north and the spectacular High Force Falls 30 minutes to the south. Only 15 miles further up the Pennines is the market town of Alston, sitting 1300 feet above sea level, and the starting point for the South Tyne Railway. The market towns of Barnard Castle, Hexham (with its racecourse and Abbey), Newcastle and Durham are all within 30 miles. The village itself has a riverside pub and small shop, playground and public tennis court, The surrounding area is renowned for its wildlife and Slitt Wood with its burbling and gushing beck (a 5 minute walk from the house) is a Site of Special Scientific Interest and bloomin lovely to walk up through. The brooding Hamsterley Forest is 20 minutes by car and is perfect for walks, biking and picnics. Other Activities: canoeing, orienteering, Golf: 6 Golf courses within an hours drive, both 9 and 18 hole. visit a golf website for details:There's even left some clubs to borrow in the house! Ski: It was on ski Sunday for goodness sake, and you can't get much better than that!It is called Swinhope Moor, which began in 1963 and is run by the Weardale Ski Club, comprising 14 volunteers. These include a fireman who works at the club in his spare time and a retired mechanic. They're up there in the summer cutting the rushes, and in the winter manning the two button lifts and the piste basher. There are seven pisted runs, off-piste slopes and a gully with jumps and ledges. They were awarded the 'Recreational Club of the Year Award' by Snow Sport England at an awards ceremony last month. I have also skied up on the county border with Northumberland. Minus 3, purple wax, and the skis and wax, plus boots are all available in the loft (size 10 large). 2 sets of everything. Have a look at the pub opposite; they do great food and it only takes 30 seconds to walk there!
Getting around
A car or bike is the best way to enjoy the local area, although straight walks out from the House are glorious! More details are on the website about where to visit, plus a comprehensive set of tourist booklets at the property. Clare the Housekeeper has also done the County Durham 'World Host' course, so you should be well looked after in places to go!
Access

How to get there
One hour and 35 miles from Penrith off the M6, or Durham up the A1 (M), or 40 minutes south of Hexham. A car is likely best way to get here, and best for enjoying the local area. Any other queries, do be in touch.
