Black Dog House is a lovely place to unwind, relax and enjoy. The house and the surrounding countryside have something to offer all ages and interests. It's grand for couples, groups of friends and families, with flexible accommodation and every comfort provided. The house is actually two 19th Century stone-built terraced cottages, joined together to provide a fine place to stay over 3 floors, and has been fully refurbished - I should know, i was in there grappling the RSJ's through the bedroom window! There is plenty of space for everyone to do their own thing indoors, whilst the front garden is good for breakfast, and the rear yard is a place for evening drinks or a small BBQ. The set-up can be seen quite easily from the pictures, but essentially it's a walk in to the dining room area...Black Dog House is a lovely place to unwind, relax and enjoy. The set-up can be seen quite easily from the pictures, but essentially it's a walk in to the dining room area with a wood burner, then through to a large sitting room with an open fire. The kitchen is off this will a large range of 'stuff' to get cooking with. Out the back there is a small office area with table and computer point with a door to the back yard. A jump over the wall and you're in the fields! Upstairs there are two doubles, one of which has an en-suite, a twin bedded room and a bathroom. On the top floor there is a big room (ideal for locking away children!) with a large combination of beds available. The location itself is hard to beat, with breathtaking moorland, woods, mountains, rivers, SERIOUS waterfalls and charming small towns. If you visit once, you'll likely want to come back for more .... 3 Star Gold self-catering award through the AA Tourism England organisation. I have been offered four stars for a max of 8, or stick with the Gold award for the higher occupancy which I have done - not that there is any bias involved! Who has stayed: Since starting two years ago, we have had a huge variety of groups stay, many of which have taken the trouble to give Black Dog House good reviews. It'd be best to read their words below, but in summary I would say we can successfully cater for most peoples needs, so do get in contact if there is anything that you'd like clarifying.

Not quite what we expected
My wife has already submitted a review of the premises, (ScotlandGalaxy) and we attended together with her parents. I fully support my wife's review, and confirm that everything she said was accurate and honest. I felt her review was fair and more positive than negative, and was surprised that the owner suggested that any one interested in hiring the cottage only read the positive reviews ..... I absolutely don't agree with that. As he said - you can't please everyone all of the time, but it is only fair that all views be allowed to be voiced. I would point out that we did have initial problems when making the booking, but it was all sorted in the end, which is what my wife said. The facilities were pretty good but very dated. The seats in the sitting room were VERY uncomfortable. The dust and dog hairs was pretty ridiculous. Cleaning of lower surfaces definitely needs to be addressed. We ended up leaving a day prior to expected because we really couldn't find anything else to do ..... Disappointing if you don't plan your stay, or can't walk very far.

Good to see you supporting your wife's view, as this is very important in life! We'd love to see you back again to show that it is indeed a lovely place to stay and that you don't really need to plan. We have a number of options, maps and suggestions in our comprehensive folders at the House so with a bit of imagination one can easily enjoy the wonderful and unspoilt countryside. I did refer to other good reviews, because thankfully those are the only ones that I presently have. That said, many thanks for your extra input, and I will surely pay attention to you and your wife's points and approach. All the best in any case, Martin

Sigh ......
I am always honest when it comes to these reviews, so going to put in all the information, as I believe it is relevant. When I booked the cottage, I requested 4 nights - but I had put in the wrong dates which indicated only 3 nights. All emails referred to 4 nights. When I put the information into the website, it gave me a price of £315.08 but was sent an invoice for £480. When I queried this, it was blamed on a 'glitch' on the website. I paid the deposit immediately and returned the required documents. A few months later I received an email asking if I still wanted to hire the cottage as there were other people who had enquired. I confirmed I still wished to rent the accommodation..... It later transpired that the reason for the email was because my payment hadn't been recorded against my booking and I was required to confirm that payment had been made - despite me having an email from the owner confirming payment had been received. A few weeks prior to the holiday, I messaged to confirm the 4 night booking, to be told I was only booked in for 3 nights, and there would be an additional payment of £150 for one more night accommodation. I was absolutely horrified by this!!!!! The owner agreed to allow us to stay the extra night at no extra charge as I has requested to cancel the holiday. SIGH!!!! So when making a booking, please ensure you keep all your paper work and confirmation of everything. Now for the actual cottage. Good Points: Kitchen very well stocked with electrical equipment Plenty crockery and cutlery and other small items - except for kitchen towels. Some crockery had chips out of them so should really be disposed of. The cottage was warm and well heated, and easy to use. Bedrooms were a good size. All beds on the first floor were comfortable and bed linen was clean. A good variety of pillows to choose from. The selection of extra jackets was very useful and appreciated. Bad points: No parking outside the premises. Had to park across the drive, unload, then move the vehicle to the layby. The outside areas are very very small, lots of weeks and quite untidy. The carpets in the sitting room were dirty and lots of marks. The furniture in the sitting room is disappointing, dated, very uncomfortable and dirty. Lots of dog hairs on a lot of the furniture. My husband has hay fever and struggled a bit. The floor in the dining area was filthy - particularly under the units. Again, lots of animal fur floating around. Towels are not very good quality. Found it difficult to get dry with them. Also very small so suggest you take your own. My dad walks with a walking stick. The stairs are very narrow and he found them difficult to navigate. Ended up having to come down the stairs backwards to keep his stability. My mum also found the stairs quite steep. We were so disappointed we ended up leaving a day before we should have ....... Sigh ......

It is a sadness to me that you cannot please everyone all the time, and that whatever you do in a positive way is forgotten. I obviously welcome genuine feedback and there are some valuable points here for which I shall of course pay attention. That said, the facts of the matter were quite different in many instances from that portrayed, and I genuinely tried my very hardest to look after the group that stayed. I therefore would only ask that any visitors read all the other reviews here, or the only positive reviews (4 and five stars and over 25 of them) on other sites, before jumping to any conclusions. Do ask in your dealings with me if you would like the background to this case. In frustration, Martin

A beautiful environment to be in!
A very beautiful old country cottage in beautiful peaceful surroundings. Inside is lovely and spacious, with everything you could possibly need for a great weekend. Beds are fantastic - as are the bedrooms! It's very difficult to find any faults - if you want a good base for Weardale, going walking or otherwise, then this is the place!

Great cottage in a superb location !
An excellent base to explore the surrounding countryside, from a massive open fire to a dinner table big enough to seat 8 Black Dog has it all. Fantastic river walks just across the road by the park and just round the corner from the pub. The house has limited outside space but this is more than made up with the space inside, we were two families with eight bikes and four kids aged from 5-8. If you're looking for boutique style accommodation then this is not for you but, if you're after excellent period accommodation geographically located to take advantage of all the area has to offer then this will be right up your street

Thank you for a lovely review Libby, and boutique doesn't really suit Weardale, and I love it for that. Hope to see you again, and all the best, Martin

Wonderful Weardale
This is a perfect place to stay to explore Weardale. The house is really comfortable and well appointed. ..a real home from home. The pub over the road brews its own beer. ..delicious! The food is scrumptious, reasonably priced and plentiful. We had a brilliant week.

Brilliant owner, fantastic house, wonderful area.
Second weekend stay here for our group ( friends who work together). We loved it so much in July, we couldn't wait to get back for Christmas. The house is cosy and comfortable, and can easily sleep 11adults if 3 of them don't mind inflatable beds. It is clean and warm, and the poem log fire in the sitting room is wonderful. There is a log burner in the dining room too. The owner has thoughtfully provided anything you could wish for...loads of books, DVDs and games, telescope, iPod Dock with speakers etc. He even left out a Christmas tree for us to decorate! We thought we had a problem with hot water and both he and his housekeeper were on hand immediately to sort it out. Turns out we were being a bit thick and it was fine...the poor man was lovely, even though we had wasted a good chunk of his Saturday. The Hare and Hounds pub across the road is wonderful. Everyone is very friendly and the food is delicious. The area is stunningly beautiful and there are some wonderful walks. We had a great trip out to Stanhope, which has some quirky and original shops. Anyway, to summarise, Black Dog House is a wonderful place to stay for a large group of people. We will be back again in the summer so that we can enjoy a barbecue on the patio...a fabulous sun trap. Highly recommended!!

About the neighbourhood
Westgate lies within the Wear Valley which is part of the Pennines designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty; perfect for mountain biking, bird watching, riding, painting, photography and even skiing. There are lots of things to see locally - museums, mines, castles, gardens, railways, historic cities, Hadrian’s Wall 30 minutes to the north and the spectacular High Force Falls 30 minutes to the south. Only 15 miles further up the Pennines is the market town of Alston, sitting 1300 feet above sea level, and the starting point for the South Tyne Railway. The market towns of Barnard Castle, Hexham (with its racecourse and Abbey), Newcastle and Durham are all within 30 miles. The village itself has a riverside pub and small shop, playground and public tennis court, The surrounding area is renowned for its wildlife and Slitt Wood with its burbling and gushing beck (a 5 minute walk from the house) is a Site of Special Scientific Interest and bloomin lovely to walk up through. The brooding Hamsterley Forest is 20 minutes by car and is perfect for walks, biking and picnics. Other Activities: canoeing, orienteering, Golf: 6 Golf courses within an hours drive, both 9 and 18 hole. visit a golf website for details:There's even left some clubs to borrow in the house! Ski: It was on ski Sunday for goodness sake, and you can't get much better than that!It is called Swinhope Moor, which began in 1963 and is run by the Weardale Ski Club, comprising 14 volunteers. These include a fireman who works at the club in his spare time and a retired mechanic. They're up there in the summer cutting the rushes, and in the winter manning the two button lifts and the piste basher. There are seven pisted runs, off-piste slopes and a gully with jumps and ledges. They were awarded the 'Recreational Club of the Year Award' by Snow Sport England at an awards ceremony last month. I have also skied up on the county border with Northumberland. Minus 3, purple wax, and the skis and wax, plus boots are all available in the loft (size 10 large). 2 sets of everything. Have a look at the pub opposite; they do great food and it only takes 30 seconds to walk there!
Getting around
A car or bike is the best way to enjoy the local area, although straight walks out from the House are glorious! More details are on the website about where to visit, plus a comprehensive set of tourist booklets at the property. Clare the Housekeeper has also done the County Durham 'World Host' course, so you should be well looked after in places to go!

How to get there
One hour and 35 miles from Penrith off the M6, or Durham up the A1 (M), or 40 minutes south of Hexham. A car is likely best way to get here, and best for enjoying the local area. Any other queries, do be in touch.
