A convenient base to explore the East Lothian countryside and seascapes or venture into Edinburgh, just 20 minutes by train. Oozing old charm the flat is the lower part of a lovely 1790 Georgian period townhouse, formerly the kitchens and servants quarters (so has that inimitable low ceiling cottage feel), with access to a small quiet private garden from where you can glimpse the sea (it is a few minutes walk via the High Street). The flat is an ideal pied-a-terre for those wanting to be mostly out and about. If you are looking for soulless luxury or a place mainly to sit around and watch TV, getting up at midday, this probably ain't for you. But if you are interested in the great outdoors and quiet be aches, amazing wild and birdlife (50,000 gannets live and fish of the Bass Rock nearby), fascinating geology (Hutton was born just up the road), stunning landscapes fashioned by glaciers, the rich (and dark) history of old country houses, while exploring the place where the philosopher Voltaire looked for all ideas about civilisation, then 'tak a keek' - or 'take a look' as the Scots would say. Our guests include academics, researchers and students, teachers, walkers and cyclists, beachcombers, surfers, and wildlife enthusiasts, golfers, photographers, historians, artists, cooks, actors and performers, comedians, culture vultures, John Muir enthusiasts and lookalikes, ancestry seekers, bakers and crafts people too from all over the world. The tenement at Templelands is said to have belonged to the Knights Templar, according to James Smith in his history of Dunbar 1859, which you are welcome to borrow.More

About the neighbourhood
Rural market and fishing towns, communities. You are not far from picturesque villages of Gifford, Stenton, North Berwick and East Linton, stunning coastal walking and relaxing countryside havens (Hailes, Traprain, Smeaton, Pishwanton) and the seats of significant Scottish houses, like Broxmouth, Gosford, Newhailes, and Lennoxlove. The Scottish and English Borders are not far away. Edinburgh isn't far away, so if you need an injection of urban culture - you can be there in a giffy. Some of our guests manage to visit the Highlands, but we're not sure we'd recommend it in a day! Glasgow, Stirling, Perth and Dundee are manageable though, as is Newcastle upon Tyne and Berwick upon Tweed.
Getting around
Easy peasy by public transport (rail or bus) or by car, foot or bike (which can be rented locally). The harbour is nearby so I dare say you could even sail to Dunbar.
