Kirtomy, Scottish Highlands, Scotland
'Ceol-na-Mara' – Gaelic for music of the sea – is a beautifully restored former croft house in a stunning position overlooking the north Atlantic.
Listen to the waves crashing on the dramatic coastline, smell the peat smoke, and absorb the peace and beauty of this magical crofting community.
The croft house was completely restored a few years ago but it retains charming traditional features including a wood burning stove, pine panelling and a Caithness flag floor.
Set in a large enclosed garden, it is the perfect place to relax and unwind.
Sutherland is one of Scotland's best-kept secrets. Situated in the far north of Scotland, it is a sparsely populated area of stunning scenery and tranquillity. Walk for hours in the rugged hills or along sandy beaches and craggy coastlines without meeting a soul.

This is a beautiful croft house located in Kirtomy. We had a fabulous time here over Christmas. The house has plenty of electric heaters along with the wood burner for them cold winter nights. Beds were comfy and warm. It's a fantastic place to get away from it all, we saw maybe 3 people during our stay. The views from...

A comfortable and welcoming cottage which has views of the sea. It has retained many of its traditional characteristics and the furnishings are in keeping. Like most small settlements on the north coast of Sutherland, Kirtomy is remote and windswept. There is a small bay that can accessed with a short walk. We would happily stay there again.

We own a place down the street on the way to the water in Kirtomy that is under renovation and we use Caroline's place on each trip to check on the progress of the builders. A very convenient, clean and comfortable place like most people want when away from home. Kirtomy is a rare jewel on the North Coast of...

From Inverness take the A9 north to Evanton. At Evanton take the B9176 for about 9 miles until it joins the A836. Drive via Bonar Bridge, Lairg and Altnaharra. At Altnaharra take the B873 along Loch Naver and up to Syre. At Syre continue up Strathnaver on the B871 then take the A836 to Bettyhill. Continue along the coast road through Bettyhill and after about 2 miles take the turning for Kirtomy. Ceol-na-Mara is on the far side of the village just beyond the bridge. This is the most direct route and also the most scenic. The landscape is remote and wonderful and there is a good chance of spotting birds of prey and red deer. In winter it is essential to check the forecast before setting off. The main A9 route via Thurso is more likely to be open if there is snow.Don't forget to pack bino... more
