Just perfect!
This delightful cottage has everything you could possibly need for a relaxing holiday. Really enjoyed our short three night stay. Pretty much central to everything on the north coast. (The local garden centre is definitely with a visit - if only for breakfast or lunch). In reading other reviews it seems that many people are return 'customers'. We will be joining that list. Lovely to meet the host Sally who made us feel very welcome on our first day.

A good location, comfortable, warm, with everything you could need.
We spent a magical week in N Ireland, much helped by staying in Swallow Cottage. Quiet, with a lovely outlook. Comfortable, warm (very important) and well equipped if you want to cook 'at home'. Unusually the twin room was as comfortable as the double room. (Possibly bedroom space a bit limited if 4 people staying.) Well placed for the Giant's Causeway and the Glens of Antrim and only a few minutes drive into the village. It really had everything we could have wanted.

Charming quiet and comfortable cottage
It’s lovely and quiet with a nice garden. We spent a wonderful honeymoon there and were welcomed by a card, a bottle of fizz and a bunch of flowers picked from the garden. A nice touch. Sally also popped in on the first day. We found it to be warm and cosy. Well equipped and clean. The decor fits perfectly with an old cottage which adds to its charm. The cottage is a short drive from Bushmills but also a reasonable walk on country roads. Bushmills has some excellent restaurants and pubs but the cottage is also a 5 minute walk from a garden centre with a cafe. A perfect place to explore the Causeway Coast. Would definitely recommend for a couple.

Cosy old cottage, very peaceful
The owner Sally was very welcoming with milk and cake and some great leaflets on local walks. The cottage was delightful and warm, especially in the evenings with the log burner. Sadly it was too cold to use the garden but we enjoyed watching all the birds through the picture window while we had breakfast. We loved the spring flowers and pussy willows. Bushmills was a half hour walk away (we took the quieter and more scenic Craigaboney Road, not the main road) with bars, restaurants and the distillery tour. Highlights were the awesome coastal walks, Donegal, Derry (by train from Coleraine through fantastic scenery). A fabulous area with really friendly local people, especially in the Bush House Bar.

New year chill
This was our 3rd time at Swallow Cottage. We celebrated the New year here. Went on 31st Dec 2019 came home 3rd Jan 2020. The best break away in a while. The peace and quiet is brilliant, the ambience in the cottage is relaxing and the multi burner is the icing on the cake. Sally are hostess is amazing. Nothing is too much bother for her. Any inquiries is answered very quick. Will definitely be back to visit Swallow cottage again as it is home from home for us.

Home from home
Third time at Swallow Cottage, and yet again, our slice of Heaven. Sally as always getting us in extra logs and peat for the massive fire, and a lovely touch of a bottle of Bucks Fizz for New Years' Eve. Pretty much everything we needed for our 3 days is supplied(apart from your own food, of course). Cutlery, plates, oven, washing machine, freezer, heating,tea,coffee....you name it, it's probably there. Such a quiet area, 20min walk into Bushmills. Copper Kettle for brekfast or lunch..Then Bushmills Inn for a few drinks beside peat fire..then back to our own fire and chill time. Look forward to next time. Thanks Sally.

Heaven ....again!
Our second time at Swallow Cottage and now we're home...I wish we were still there. Wonderfully peaceful and relaxed as before, Sallys' welcome of milk and buns is a lovely touch. Extra logs too this time for an extra night, much appreciated. As quaint and homely as you would expect. The only time we left the cottage was to go to the Ramore for dinner one night, for a couple of hours. Rest of the time we read, watched a bit of TV, generally disengaged our brains. LOVED IT!! See you again, Sally.

About the neighbourhood
The Bushmills area, where Swallow Cottage is located, offers so much for you to enjoy a unique holiday. The magnificent coastal scenery, right on the door stop, is breathtaking. A must is to visit the famous Giant's Causeway, reputed to be one of the natural 'Wonders of the World', with its towering basaltic cliffs and its unique rock formations, jutting out into the sea. The causeway is easily accessible - you can either walk down to the Causeway stones (20 mins) or there is a shuttle bus operating during the spring and summer seasons. Close by is Dunluce Castle, a historical medieval castle built by the 2nd Earl of Ulster, perilously on the cliff's edge, with superb views stretching along the white rocks strand to the seaside town of Portrush and the County of Donegal beyond. Park your car at the eastern end of the white rock strand, close by Dunluce Castle, and enjoy a brisk walk (30 mins) along the prestine, white, sandy beach to Portrush, where there is an excellent coffee shop waiting you at the end of the strand. If you head along the coast eastwards from the Giant's Causeway, don't miss a trip down to the picturesque fishing harbours of Dunseverick, or Ballintoy, with its quirky house, built by an eccentric Queen's University lecturer, and a delightful tea house, located in a traditional fisherman's cottage (open during spring and summer). A bit further on, you can challenge yourself and others to cross the Carrick-a-Reade rope bridge, suspension bridge (only open during the spring and summer months) straddled between the mainland and a small sheep island. Travelling further along the coast you will reach the small seaside town of Ballycastle, from where you can take a boat trip to Rathlin Island, the most northerly point of Northern Ireland. Located just off the coast, Rathlin has a population of just over 100 and is also home to tens of thousands of birds, including common guillemots; kittiwakes; puffins and razorbills - a absolute paradise for the wildlife photographer. Ballycastle plays host, on the last Monday and Tuesday of August, to the 400 year old, historic Lamas Fair, where you can buy amongst other things, live stock, the famous 'Yellow Man' rock, similar to honeycombe, and dulse, an edible seaweed, with a very high content of vitamins, minerals and protein. In the town there are cafes and small restaurants to stop for lunch, or some excellent Irish pubs, serving cold lager. From Ballycastle you can drive further east to visit the Glens of Antrim,. Consisting of nine glens (valleys), it is an area of outstanding beauty and one of the major attractions, for visitors, in North Antrim. A great place to stretch your legs or walk your dog. Closer to home, take a tour of the distillery. Located in the town of Bushmills, on the banks of the River Bush, it is the oldest licensed distillery in the world, making Irish whiskey here since 1608. Spend time in Portballintrae, formerly a fishing villlage, just one mile from Bushmills. It is a great place to bring the children where there are two safe beaches to swim, and several restaurants and cafes over looking the sea. If you enjoy fishing, you can fish directly off the rocks. If you're a golfer, you have no further to look than the 18 hole Bushfoot Golf Links, close to the mouth of the River Bush. During the spring and summer seasons, you can take a ride on the small railway for a short journey, which links Bushmills with the Giant's Causeway, passing through the golf links and crossing the River Bush. A great experience for parents and children. About 10 minutes drive from Swallow Cottage, you can visit Benvarden gardens, on the banks of the River Bush, with its woodland and rose garden made between 1800 and 1820. The historic estate of Benvarden was built in the 1630's and owned since 1798 by the Montgomery family. The gardens are open from 1st June - 31 August.

How to get there
From Belfast take the M2 towards Antrim. Exit at junction 1 onto the A26 heading to Balllymoney/ Coleraine. At Ballymoney roundabout, take the B62 passing through the small village of Ballybogey in the direction of Portrush. Continue until you reach a turn to the right onto the B17 Priestland Road heading towards Bushmills. Just one mile short of Bushmills, take a turn to the right into the Ballyclogh Road. After about 400 metres, you will see, on the left, two white Irish pillar posts. Drive up the small lane to the back, where you will find Swallow Cottage. If travelling from Belfast International Airport, which is located close to the town of Antrim, there are car rental facilities available in the airport. The journey time from Belfast International to Bushmills is just over one hour. If you are arriving at Belfast City Airport (George Best Airport) allow approximately 1 hr 30 mins to reach Swallow Cottage. If by boat and car from Scotland, consider taking scenic coastal route along the north coast to Bushmills. It will whet your appetite for much more of what North Antrim has to offer and is certainly worth doing either on the way there or back.
